Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear stance strongly agreeing that the most important aim of science should be improving lives. Relevant supporting ideas are presented regarding healthcare, environmental problems, and efficiency of work, along with an attempt at a counter-argument regarding space and historical research. However, the development of ideas tends to be somewhat superficial and lacks full elaboration in places. For instance, the discussion on environmental issues in the conclusion is not genuinely built upon in the body paragraphs. Overall, the response meets the general requirements of the prompt, earning a band 6.0 for addressing all parts of the task with relevant, albeit slightly under-developed, ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response shows a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, utilising standard cohesive devices such as 'TO COMMENCE WITH', 'MOREOVER', and 'IN CONCLUSION'. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, moving from healthcare to technology and counter-arguments. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, 'ANHANCEMENTS IN MEDICAL SYSTEM, DOCTOR ARE ABLE...' demonstrates awkward cohesion at the sentence level, and the capitalisation throughout the essay disrupts the natural flow. While the overarching structure is logical enough to follow easily, the frequent mechanical errors in transitional phrasing and sentence links place this criterion firmly at a band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the academic prompt, including terms like 'innovations', 'technological advancement', and 'medication'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'ANHANCEMENTS', 'FINDOUT', 'ACCORDIGALY', 'FRAMER', 'MORDEN', 'CONTIBUTES', 'BELIVE', 'IMROVING', 'ISSUE', and 'KNOWNING'. While the meaning is generally clear despite these inaccuracies, the high frequency of spelling mistakes and awkward collocations like 'EFFICIENCY OF WORK' restrict the lexical score. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and control required for higher bands, fitting the descriptors for a band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like structures (e.g., 'IN THE PAST, LOT OF PEOPLE DIED BEACUSE LACK OF TREATMENTS...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors across the text, including missing articles ('lot of people', 'lack of treatments'), incorrect verb forms ('are make easier', 'is requires'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('doctor are able', 'some research are not'). Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with the entire essay written in capital letters. These errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader, though they do not completely impede communication. This performance aligns with a band 5.0.
