IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Science has played a crucial role in shaping modern society, from improving healthcare to developing advanced technologies. Some people argue that the most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. I largely agree with this view because scientific progress is most valuable when it addresses human needs and solves practical problems, although scientific research should also be allowed to pursue knowledge for its own sake.
One major reason for prioritising the improvement of human life is that scientific discoveries can directly address serious problems. Medical research, for example, has led to vaccines, antibiotics and treatments for numerous diseases that were once life-threatening. During the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists developed vaccines in a remarkably short period of time, helping to reduce severe illness and deaths. Similarly, advances in medical technology, such as MRI scanners and robotic surgery, have enabled doctors to diagnose and treat patients more effectively. These examples demonstrate how science can have a direct and significant impact on people's well-being.
Another important area is environmental protection. Scientific research has helped us understand climate change and develop cleaner technologies. Solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicles, for instance, can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and help limit air pollution. In developing countries, relatively simple scientific innovations, such as water purification systems and efficient agricultural methods, can also improve living conditions and protect communities from disease and food shortages. Therefore, directing scientific research towards practical human and environmental problems can provide substantial benefits to society.
However, I do not believe that improving people's lives should be the only purpose of science. Basic research is also essential, even when its immediate practical benefits are unclear. Discoveries in areas such as physics, astronomy and genetics may initially appear to have little connection with everyday life, but they can eventually lead to important technological developments. For example, research into fundamental physics contributed to technologies that are now widely used in modern electronics and communications. If scientists were required to focus only on research with immediate practical applications, potentially transformative discoveries might never be made.
In conclusion, I largely agree that improving people's lives should be one of the principal aims of science because scientific knowledge can solve major problems in healthcare, the environment and living standards. Nevertheless, fundamental research should not be neglected, since today's theoretical discoveries may become tomorrow's life-changing technologies.
