IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Science play a major role in people’s lives. It is often argued that the main aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. I partially agree with this statement because science tells people how the world actually work around us.
Apparently, in some areas science acts as a backbone for ourselves. This is because they can give us the actual answers for our questions. Fields especially in medical field science helps us to know and give us a logical reason on what’s happening to our body.
Nevertheless, space stations work on the base of science. For example, rocket launching is literally done on these kind of scientific calculations done in the background. Even though science helps humans to improve people’s life they sometimes don’t have answers too.
Contrastingly, science can also lead people’s lives in a bad way also. Some people tend to use fake science to promote their scams. Especially, people who learn astronomy uses fake calculation and they give false hope to people. Although there are some individuals who use science in the actual and legal way.
To conclude, I believe that one of the most important aim of science can be to improve people’s lives. However, it can also have negative side too.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether science should primarily improve lives, presenting a partial agreement. However, the ideas lack sufficient depth and development. For instance, the paragraph discussing space exploration ('space stations work on the base of science') is somewhat disconnected from the core theme of improving human life. Crucially, the response falls short of the minimum word count, containing only 207 words against the required 250 words. This under-length limitation directly impacts the overall task achievement, preventing the ideas from being fully extended and supported as required by higher band descriptors. As a result, the response aligns most closely with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into five short paragraphs, providing a basic structural framework with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, logical progression is often weak. The transition between ideas within paragraphs can be abrupt, such as moving from medical science to space stations without a clear cohesive link. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and sometimes inaccurately, as seen with the transition 'Contrastingly' which does not accurately frame the argument about fake science. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs are too brief and undeveloped. Referencing is occasionally unclear, leading to an overall impression of mechanical organisation. These features place the response firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'people', 'life', and 'science'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'fake science', 'astronomy uses fake calculation', and 'actual and legal way'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, inaccurate word choices and imprecise usage occasionally cause confusion for the reader. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the overall range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, reflecting the descriptors for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'Science play a major role' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'these kind of scientific calculations done' (singular/plural mismatch). There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies and preposition misuse. Although these errors rarely completely impede communication, they cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and demonstrate weak control over complex grammatical structures. This performance is characteristic of Band 5.
