Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating their position that the most significant aim of science should be the betterment of our lifestyle, agreeing with the statement. The response presents several relevant supporting points, such as medical advancements, agricultural technology, and historical discoveries. However, some ideas are a bit repetitive or lack deep elaboration, and certain statements border on tangents, such as discussing history or environmental disasters rather than directly linking them back to improving people's lives. Overall, the main task requirements are met with a clear, albeit somewhat generalized, stance throughout. This performance aligns well with Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, paragraphing is not always fully managed, and the transitions between sentences can feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as jumping between history, environmental changes, and agriculture within the same paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'science has become it's answer'). Paragraph breaks are utilized to group related ideas, but internal progression is sometimes disrupted by sudden shifts in topic. This corresponds to a Band 6 level for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases like 'embedded', 'technological innovations', and 'phenomenon'. However, there are numerous spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'higly' instead of highly, 'madicine' instead of medicine, 'extinct' instead of extinct (or used incorrectly as 'went instinct'), 'qurey' instead of query, 'ouccurrence' instead of occurrence, 'varaity' instead of variety, 'seasaon' instead of season, 'peer' instead of pear, and 'innvotions' instead of innovations. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the score from reaching a higher band, fitting comfortably at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('science play vital role', 'lifes of our ancestors was'), missing articles, and incorrect pronoun use ('science has become it's answer'). Complex sentences are often attempted, but errors in formation can cause some difficulty or hesitation for the reader. While communication is still maintained, the density of grammatical mistakes keeps the score at a Band 5.0.
