IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Science plays an important role in modern society, and many scientific discoveries have changed the way people live. I strongly agree that the most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives because scientific research can improve health, make daily activities easier and solve major problems.

The first reason is that science can greatly improve human health. Scientists have developed medicines, vaccines and medical equipment that can prevent and treat many diseases. For example, vaccines have helped protect millions of people from serious illnesses. In addition, modern medical technology allows doctors to identify some diseases earlier and provide better treatment. Therefore, improving health should be one of the main goals of scientific research.

Another important reason is that science can make people's daily lives easier and more efficient. Technological developments have improved transportation, communication and education. For instance, people can now communicate with someone in another country within seconds using smartphones and the internet. Similarly, online education allows students to attend classes and access learning materials without travelling to a school or university. These developments save time and provide people with more opportunities.

However, science also has other purposes, such as exploring space and understanding the natural world. Although these areas may not provide immediate benefits, they can lead to useful discoveries in the future. For example, research into space technology has contributed to developments in communication and satellite systems. Nevertheless, I believe that improving human life should remain the main priority because scientific progress is most valuable when it addresses people's needs.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving people's lives should be the most important aim of science. Although scientific research can also help us understand the universe, its greatest value is its ability to improve health, solve problems and make everyday life easier.
