Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses the prompt by clearly taking a stance in agreement with the statement that science should aim to improve people's lives. Main ideas are presented, such as healthcare, education, and pandemic support, and a personal position is maintained throughout. However, the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, containing only 213 words instead of the required 250 words. This under-length severely limits the depth and full development of the arguments, leaving some points somewhat brief and under-developed. Consequently, Task Achievement is penalised for length, aligning best with a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a basic attempt at organization, featuring an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is present, though transitions between ideas can be abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'morever', 'for example', and 'In conclusion', but some are inaccurate or mechanical. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally disrupted by mechanical linking errors. Although the overall progression is somewhat evident, the cohesive framework lacks flexibility and control, placing this response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, touching upon relevant concepts such as 'healthcare', 'vaccines', and 'scientific advancements'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the response, including 'deveploment', 'so society', 'eduction', 'improved peoples lives', 'tottally', 'vacciens', 'euducation', 'throgh', 'belive', and 'mation'. These spelling and word-form inaccuracies are noticeable and occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, which restricts the lexical score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'science has played a vital role...' and 'because scientific advancements help solve human problems...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, marked by frequent punctuation and capitalization errors, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('i tottally agree', 'morever, during COVID-19 pandemic lock down throgh the science online classes helped...'). There are also structural slips and agreement issues that cause readability difficulties. The range of structures is limited and often faulty when complexity is attempted, meriting a Band 5.0.
