Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that the most important aspect of Science should be to improve human lifestyle. I largely agree with this idea because there is a number of human problems that need to solved and the growing number of natural threats and disasters to the survival of humanity.

One major reason is the large number of problems that humans face. From pollution to disease, everything is affecting mankind in one way or the other. For example, there are thousands of diseases that are yet undiscovered and many a diseases that are not yet curable. Similarly, there is different kinds of pollution, whic are increasing the number of illnesses everday. Therefore, we first need to focus on first solving these fundamental problems in order to better protect human life and survival.

Another reason is the increasing number of natural threats and disasters. There is climate change, the risk of the collision of celestial bodies headed toward the Earth, and natural disasters such as floods, storms, tsunamis, etc. For instance, the damage of Ozone layer causes the harmful rays to enter into the Earth's atmosphere and cause life-threatening diseases like Cancer. Likewise, there occur diasters everday everywhere in the world, in which there happen to many injuries and casualities. Due to these reasons, we need to make thorough use of Science to be able to save humanity from such threats and disasters.

In conclusion, I largely agree that the primary purpose of Science should be to make human lifestyle better. Therefore, we need to fcous on making use of Science to overcome factors that affect humanity before deleving into making other kind of inventions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear position that the primary aim of science should be to improve human life. The introduction outlines the stance, and the body paragraphs offer relevant arguments centered on human problems, diseases, pollution, and natural disasters. However, the development of ideas leans somewhat towards over-generalisation and lacks fully elaborated specific examples. For instance, mentioning that 'there are thousands of diseases that are yet undiscovered' remains broad without targeting specific contextual evidence. Overall, the ideas are relevant and support the main thesis well, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clarity of position and sustained focus throughout, it comfortably earns a Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear overall progression as the writer moves from general problems to natural disasters. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader, such as 'One major reason is', 'Another reason is', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitional links occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, as seen in the repeated phrasing of paragraph openings. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points. Because the logical progression is clear overall with functional cohesive devices, the response satisfies the requirements for Band 6.0, touching upon elements of Band 6.5, but fits best at Band 6.0 due to occasional repetitive transitional structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'celestial bodies', 'casualities' (though misspelled as 'casualities'), and 'deleving' (intended as 'delving'). There are several noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'everday' instead of 'everyday', 'whic' instead of 'which', and spelling slips like 'diasters'. While these errors do not impede communication, they demonstrate a lower level of precision than required for Band 7. The vocabulary range is sufficient to convey the main arguments clearly, making Band 6.0 the most accurate reflection of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses ('that need to solved', 'that are headed toward the Earth') and conditional ideas. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'there is a number of human problems that need to solved' (omitting 'be' and subject-verb agreement with plural nouns), 'there is different kinds of pollution', and punctuation slips. Although these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur regularly and prevent the response from achieving a Band 6.5. A mixture of successful complex structures alongside persistent grammatical inaccuracies places this firmly at Band 6.0.
