Student answer (Band 5.5)

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. Today science have done alot of advancements in every field of life to improve people's life.

I agree with the statement as the main goal and first preority of researchers is to make everyone's life easier than yestarday. like science made travel so easy for everyone, it developed engines then cars and even aircrafts to move human from place to the other in short time. Using this invention of science we can cover distace that tooks months in hours now.

According to me this invention is the most usefull invention of the history. Now scientists developed alot more things like elecrticity, compter and internet. All these are invented for humans to improve their lives. With electricity we can now see in dark with very low cost, using computers we c an manage our data and make calculations, with the use of internet the world has now become a global village. Internet connects the whole world like everyone in a village connect with eachother, using this we can connect with anyone sitting anywhere in the world.

Along these all positive aspects of sciense there negative impacts too. Like with improving technology in science human develop arms and differnet machines for their defend. There are more negative use of wepons than positive uses, like to kidnap someone or snatch something from someone.

Sciene also make us more sick and lazy like the major thing which impact this is a T.V. most people just sit the whole day and watch it with no active work, while sitting all day with no activity the whole week it makes them ill.

So, i'm totally agree with that the main aim of science should be to improve poeple's lives and it's doing it very well. But too much addictive to scince and technology can be harmfull for us.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with the statement that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The writer presents relevant ideas, such as transportation, electricity, computers, and the internet, while also considering negative aspects like weaponry and sedentary lifestyles caused by television. However, the development of ideas tends to be limited and slightly repetitive, with examples lacking depth or broader extension. For instance, the discussion on weapons and television remains brief and superficial rather than fully explored. This performance aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors, as all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs addressing positive and negative impacts, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs bundle multiple distinct ideas together, such as grouping electricity, computers, and the internet with travel. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes in a repetitive or mechanical manner, such as the frequent reliance on phrases like 'using this' or 'like'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences starting abruptly without strong logical transitions. Progression is visible, but the connections between sentences sometimes feel disjointed. Overall, this reflects the characteristics of a Band 5.5 or 6.0; however, due to clear paragraph divisions and an overarching logical structure, a Band 6.0 is well-justified.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic ideas about science and technology. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'advancements', 'global village', and 'sedentary' (implied through inactive lifestyle), but these are mixed with frequent spelling mistakes ('preority', 'yestarday', 'usefull', 'elecrticity', 'compter', 'sciense', 'wepons', 'Sciene', 'harmfull') and lexical errors ('defend' instead of defense, 'more sick' instead of unhealthier). While the writer's meaning is generally clear despite the errors, the frequency of spelling and word-choice slips prevents the score from reaching a higher band. Therefore, this fits the Band 5.0 descriptors, showing a limited range with noticeable errors causing some difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'With electricity we can now see in dark with very low cost, using computers we can manage our data...' However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the text, featuring frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('Today science have done', 'science also make'), article usage ('in history', 'the major thing'), and prepositions. Punctuation is also problematic, marked by run-on sentences and comma splices. While the writer attempts complex structures, these attempts frequently result in grammatical faults. Because errors are frequent and occasionally require the reader to re-read to grasp the meaning, the response sits comfortably within the Band 5 descriptors.
