Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student addresses the prompt by discussing whether the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives and introduces a nuanced perspective about the interdependence of human life and natural ecosystems. A clear position is presented throughout the essay, concluding that improving lives must also encompass environmental welfare and sustainability. The ideas are generally relevant, though some parts, particularly the repetitive emphasis on natural resources across the second and third body paragraphs, lack full extension and suffer from slight under-development. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task adequately, aligning with a Band 6.0 descriptor where all parts are addressed, although some arguments tend to loop without advancing new conceptual angles.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible progression from the introduction through to the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized, with distinct introductory, body, and concluding sections, although internal paragraph cohesion occasionally suffers from mechanical or repetitive transitions like 'Furthermore' and 'In addition'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly with ambiguous pronoun usage ('it is our job not to these resources'), which obscures the logical flow at sentence level. Cohesive devices are present but handled with limited flexibility. This performance corresponds to a Band 6.0, as the response maintains a logical overall progression despite faulty or mechanical links.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'over-exploitation', 'sustainability', and 'ecosystem'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, awkward collocations, and spelling mistakes that detract from precision, such as 'standerds' instead of 'standards', 'liveswhich' lacking a space, and the phrase 'possesses use and more impactful'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect the limitations typical of a Band 6.0 score, where vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general message but lacks the fluent, flexible control required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambitious syntactic structures such as 'Nowadays, developments and advancements made in the field of science is significant then ever before...'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several noticeable agreement and structural errors, including subject-verb disagreement ('developments and advancements... is'), incorrect comparative structure ('significant then ever before'), missing verbs ('not to these resources'), and awkward relative clauses. These errors occasionally cause the reader difficulty, though communication remains mostly intact. This falls squarely into the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, best represented by a 5.5 due to the density of grammatical slips affecting clarity in complex sentences.
