Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The writer takes a clear position of agreement, stating that science should focus on making human life easier. However, the development of ideas is limited and occasionally superficial. For instance, the mention of medical advancements and agricultural improvements is relevant, but the support relies heavily on broad generalisations and personal anecdotes rather than fully extended arguments. The response meets all basic requirements of the task and presents a recognizable position throughout, corresponding to the Band 5 descriptors where ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organisational structure, dividing thoughts into paragraphs, but there is a distinct lack of clear overall progression. Paragraphing is rudimentary, with several very short paragraphs that disrupt the natural flow of ideas. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and often awkwardly, such as 'In the beginning, i want to introduce' and 'At the same time science give positive impact'. Referencing and logical transitions between sentences are frequently faulty or mechanical, making it challenging for the reader to follow the train of thought smoothly. This aligns well with the Band 5 descriptor where organisation is present, but cohesive devices are inadequate and progression is unclear.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite limited and basic, reflecting a minimal range sufficient for the task. There are frequent, noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'chanced' instead of 'changed', 'standered' instead of 'standard', 'reqiurement', 'curical', 'opnion', and 'dangered'. These errors, combined with incorrect collocations like 'expired with common disease' and 'dreived' instead of 'derived', cause some difficulty for the reader and impede comprehension in places. The lexical control struggles beyond simple, everyday language, keeping the response firmly at a Band 4.5 to 5.0 level, comfortably met by the Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is severely limited, relying predominantly on simple sentences and flawed attempts at complex structures. There are persistent, frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization (such as lowercase 'i'), subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there are lot of hospitals are build'), and tense consistency (e.g., 'if we were going 20years back there we saw that the people were expired'). These errors frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 4 descriptor where errors are frequent and often distort meaning, though meaning is occasionally retrievable.
