IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is believed that science should be used for making humans' lives easier and better.
Humans have been working on science since their existence. The main reasons for this includes humans curious and observatory nature, also we have this instinct to make our lives better. Since our creation, humans have been making things to help themselves carry out daily tasks from basic things to complex innovations we see today. First thing that people made to accommodate themselves on Earth was cloth. Fabric was needed to cover human body, and to fulfill that need people being curious and explorers invented cloths. This behaviour of humans to observe, explore, seek, create following a method is named as science in modern world.
The history of science aimed at improvement of people's lives as it was only purpose to work on different needs of society. Every invention is done to contribute something useful and more efficient to the world. In modern society, some people argue to use science for other purposes than helping humankind. I believe, that would result in waste of researchers time and money they receive from different sources to fund experiments. If a heavy time consuming and resource intensive experiment is not benefiting humans, than what is its purpose. From clothes to modern computers, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual reality, modern medicines all of this was invented to facilitate humans.
In conclusion, some people use scienctific experiments for their own advantages, to support their agendas, to earn profit wrongfully. But, I urge to keep science simple and utilize previous and new inventions, innovations only to uphold and facilitate mankind, just as we used to do in pre historic times.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives, presenting a clear personal position that agrees with the statement. Ideas are developed, such as tracing the historical evolution of science from early human needs like clothing to modern technologies like computers and medicine. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise and lack depth in places, such as the brief dismissal of scientific research that does not immediately benefit humans. While the position is clear throughout, the support remains somewhat limited in scope, fitting the Band 6 descriptors where relevant ideas are presented but slightly under-developed or simplistic in argumentation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from historical origins to modern applications and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different stages of the argument, such as the introduction, historical examples, modern implications, and conclusion. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly deployed, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences like "First thing that people made to accommodate themselves on Earth was cloth." Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel abrupt rather than smoothly linked, aligning the text well with the Band 6 descriptors for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'accommodate', 'observatory nature', and 'resource intensive'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'humans curious and observatory nature' instead of 'observant', 'cloth' instead of 'clothing', 'scienctific', and 'pre historic'. These inaccuracies reflect a Band 6 level where the vocabulary is adequate to convey the main message, but lexical control is inconsistent and occasional errors in word formation and spelling are present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with missing articles ("First thing that people made", "to cover human body"), subject-verb agreement ("reasons for this includes"), and punctuation or run-on structures. For example, sentences like "I believe, that would result in waste of researchers time" contain unnecessary comma usage and omitted possessive apostrophes. Because the errors occur frequently throughout the text but rarely impede overall communication, the performance aligns securely with Band 5.5 or Band 6, with Band 6 being awarded as communication is maintained.
