Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the modern world, science is playing an important role in improving people’s lives. Science has transformed our life completely. However, due to this we are now dependent on technology for every basic task in our daily life. MEanwhile, some people argue that the most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives, well I am unable to fully agree with this statement because I see science as a two edged sword and in this essay I will state some advantages and disadvatages of science in our lives,

On the one hand, there are many benefits of scince in our lives, as due to technology advancements we have a moblie phone and with the help of it we can contact anyone from any corner of the world, infact with the help of mobile phone we can learn new activities, Moreover, due to science invention today space exploration became possible and many astronauts even claimed to find suitable atmosphere to live on other planets. Apart from it, science also helped humans to enhance their knowledge about earth and how we humans form. It also provide valid explanation about gravity and oxygen peresent on earth.

On the other hand, it has some disadvantages too, as with the invention of mobile phones it had bring some danger to individual privacy and threat to personal information. Secondly, due to space exploration, outer universe is now polluted by the emisssion from rockets, even planets like mars and moon are in danger from human existance. Lastly, some countries are producing nuclear weapons, these dangereous weapons can destory the earth in the fraction of seconds, so the inhabitants on earth are in danger of extinction.

All in all, there is no denying in saying that science helped to improve people’s lives in many ways. Nevertheless, it has some life threatening demerits too, so I believe that we should be careful while using such technology to improve our lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether science's main aim should be improving lives and considers both advantages and disadvantages, forming an overall position. However, the treatment of the prompt leans heavily into a general discussion of the pros and cons of science rather than fully debating the specific philosophical premise that improvement of lives should be its primary aim. The student presents relevant ideas, such as technological advancements, space exploration, and nuclear weapons, but these are somewhat under-developed and generalised. The introduction also adopts an informal conversational tone ('well I am unable to fully agree'). Consequently, the task response aligns with a Band 6.0 profile, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, but lacks full depth and consistent focus on the specific question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, moving from a multi-sentence introduction through distinct body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, to a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'All in all'. However, referencing and cohesion can be mechanical or faulty, as seen in run-on sentences in the introduction and some repetitive transitions ('due to', 'with the help of'). Paragraphing is generally appropriate, though internal sentence linking occasionally falters due to comma splices and punctuation errors. These issues place the response at a Band 6.0 level for coherence and cohesion, where information and ideas are generally organized with logical progression overall.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'space exploration', 'individual privacy', and 'extinction'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'MEanwhile', 'disadvatages', 'scince', 'moblie', 'infact', 'existance', and 'dangereous'. Collocations and word forms are occasionally inaccurate, such as 'how we humans form' instead of 'how humans were formed'. While these errors are noticeable and detract from the precision of the writing, they do not severely impede communication. This performance fits the Band 6.0 descriptor, representing an adequate lexical range with some inaccuracies and spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. The essay contains significant punctuation and sentence-structure errors, notably massive run-on sentences joined by commas in the introduction and second body paragraph (e.g., 'Apart from it, science also helped humans to enhance their knowledge about earth and how we humans form. It also provide valid explanation...'). Subject-verb agreement errors are also present, such as 'science invention today space exploration became possible' and 'It also provide'. While simple sentences are generally successful, complex structures frequently contain errors. This level of control corresponds to a Band 5.0, where a limited range of structures is used and frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause some difficulty for the reader.
