Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position on whether the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives and maintains this stance throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the rise of Artificial Intelligence in professional sectors and health-related applications like tracking heart rate and menstrual cycles. However, some arguments tend to be slightly broad and could benefit from deeper extension. For instance, the discussion on professional tasks could be elaborated further regarding specific global impacts. Nevertheless, the position is clear and well-developed overall, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction and a professional focus to a health focus, followed by a summary conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'For instance', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the flow of ideas. While referencing is generally clear, occasional minor shifts in cohesion prevent the text from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structural progression meets the criteria for Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using terms such as 'advanced scientific innovations', 'automated systems', and 'significant positive contribution'. There are attempts to use less common lexical items with some awareness of style, but occasional inaccuracies occur, such as writing 'enhance lives of them' instead of 'enhance their lives' and 'keep a track on' instead of 'keep track of'. Spelling and word-choice errors are occasional and do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6.0 category with elements of Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional clauses ('If science aims to develop technologies...') and relative clauses. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present in the text, such as 'its been a few years in rise of' instead of 'since the rise of', and 'results with transformed our lives' instead of 'results which have transformed our lives'. These errors persist throughout the response, though they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar aligns with a Band 6.0 descriptor.
