Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often believed that improving people's livelihood should be the fundamental objective of science and technology. I strongly agree with this view because scientific development helps in improving people's health and making their life easier.

One main reason why science should focus in people's lives is its contribution to healthcare. Scientific research can lead to development of better health facilities and cures for several chronic diseases. In other words, research related to heathcare can discover several new tools and techniques for preventing and treating diseases. This can be seen in the current healtcare system, where development of facilites, such as advance surgical tools, medication, and preventive measure for various disease has improved the overall well-being of people. For example, over the years the cure for several life threatning disease like tuberclosis and cholera has decreased the mortality rate and conditon of people as compared to past. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in agreement with the statement and supports it with reasons related to healthcare and living standards. However, the response is cut off mid-sentence in the conclusion and fails to meet the minimum word count of 250 words, coming in at 249 words. While the ideas presented are relevant and supported with examples such as tuberculosis and cholera, the under-length nature of the response and the incomplete conclusion prevent full development of the final part of the task. Consequently, this leads to a minor penalty under Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression. Ideas are logically grouped into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs focusing on healthcare and living standards respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'In addition to health', and 'For example' are used to connect ideas, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, though the response is incomplete due to the sudden cutoff in the concluding paragraph. Overall, the structural organization is reasonably clear and follows a standard essay layout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'fundamental objective', 'chronic diseases', and 'mortality rate'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'livelihood' instead of 'lives' or 'quality of life', 'healtcare' and 'facilites', 'threatning', 'tuberclosis', 'developent', and 'robatics'. Despite these noticeable errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the essay. With better proofreading and more precise word choice, the lexical score could be higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors, such as 'focus in people's lives' instead of 'focus on', 'scientific research should are largely essential', and missing articles or incorrect prepositions. Furthermore, plural/singular agreement issues appear, such as 'inventions such as transportation, automation and wireless communication has'. However, these errors rarely impede overall communication, and many sentences remain accurate. The range of structures demonstrates a fair grasp of English grammar.
