Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people argue science has many aims, but improving human life is the most crucial one. I completely agree with this statement . In this essay, I will discuss about this topic and also provided my opinion.
Firstly, science plays an important role in human life. To begin with, most significant contribution of science is in the field of medicine, as it directly saves lives. The development of vaccine for deadly diseases such as polio, malaria, and more recently COVID-19, has saved millions of people. Furthermore, advanced treatment like surgery for cancer and modern surgical techniques would be imppossible without scientific research. As a result, the average life expecatancy in many countries has increased from around 40 years a century ago to over 75 years today.
In addition, science makes our daily life easier and more comfortable through technology and agriculture. Inventions such as electricity, the internet, smartphones, and modern transport have revolutionazied communication and reduced physical labour. Domestic appliances like washing machines and refrigerators reduce our work time by the development of science technologies. Therefore, during the development of science technology has many benifits in our daily life to reduce work hours and increase our income sources and it also benificial in our global economy. During the science technology era there are many experiments or medicines thats are benificial to cure our cancer and other disease thats are taken too much time to become extent.
In conclusion, although people have their own opinions about the distinct arguments. I, however, think that there should be the important aim of science should be to improve people's live, and there are many relevant examples of science to improve people's live and made it comfortable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout the essay agreeing that science's most important aim should be improving human life. Ideas are well-extended and supported with relevant examples, such as vaccines for polio, malaria, and COVID-19, alongside references to increased life expectancy and technological advancements. While paragraph 3 becomes slightly repetitive and tangled in its expression when discussing the economic benefits and curing cancer, the main position remains entirely clear and supported. This performance aligns well with Band 6.5, but rounding to the nearest whole band, it fits comfortably into Band 6 for adequately addressing all parts with relevant ideas, even if some development becomes slightly unclear.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphs are used to separate distinct ideas, such as medical contributions in paragraph 2 and daily life/technology in paragraph 3. However, there are some mechanical and faulty cohesive devices, such as 'discuss about this topic and also provided my opinion' and clunky transitions like 'Therefore, during the development of science technology has many benifits...'. Additionally, referencing becomes slightly confused in the final paragraph. Progression is evident, but the lack of smooth, flexible cohesive devices places this response securely at Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'life expectancy', 'revolutionized', and 'domestic appliances'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'expecatancy', 'imppossible', 'benifits', 'benificial', and 'extent' (intended as 'extinct'). Attempts at less common lexical items sometimes result in awkward phrasing, such as 'taken too much time to become extent'. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'discussed about this topic', 'most significant contribution' (missing article), and run-on, confusing sentences like 'During the science technology era there are many experiments or medicines thats are benificial to cure our cancer and other disease thats are taken too much time to become extent.' Punctuation and tense consistency also falter in places. Because the errors occur frequently alongside mixed structures but rarely obscure the core meaning, a Band 5.5 is awarded.
