Student answer (Band 5.5)

Education is the most poerful wapon which you canuse to change the world. In the contemporary era, education plays a pivotal role in shaping societies and individuals. Some people believe that science is the significant subject to improve people's life-style; however, there are some advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, science helps us to improve people's well-beings, advanced technology and life-style. Science is the subject where scientists or investigators identify a new technology either related to health-care sector or other unidentify areas such as space explorations, sea exploration, and weather prediction. For example, a famous scientist Newton who explored gravity and gave three Newton's laws. These laws help us to investigate space explorations or investigate any object's speed and weight. In addition, Thomas Edison who gave bulb and phonograph. Today's era, we cannot imagine without light. Therefore, science helps us to enhanced life-style.

On the flip side, there are some disadvantages if scientists investigate or explore any a new technology or thing by unethical way, it directly impact on human life. For instance, investigators investigate new medicine in animals or humans without any permission. This can be harmful for societies or individuals if failed. Other disadvantage is pollution; to improve people's life, we explored space, which provide more facilities like internet, GPS system, and weather forecast because we lanched numorous satelites. Due to collision between two satelites, it produced space junks and it impact on our environment.

In conclusion, science plays a significant role in human life. I firmly believe that sicence should use to improve people's life but only in ethical way and without any harms people and environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether science should primarily aim to improve people's lives, presenting arguments on both sides. A clear position is stated in the conclusion, arguing that science should indeed improve lives but only ethically. However, the introduction begins with an irrelevant quote about education ('Education is the most poerful wapon...'), which somewhat distracts from the core topic. The body paragraphs attempt to cover both advantages, such as technological advancements and space exploration, and disadvantages, like unethical medical testing and space debris. While the ideas are relevant, some points are slightly repetitive or under-developed, placing this response at a Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into clear paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Transitional markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the flip side', and 'In conclusion' are used to signal the progression of ideas. However, the overall cohesion can be mechanical at times, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the sudden shift into Newton's laws without smooth connective tissue. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different perspectives, but the logical flow between sentences within paragraphs requires tighter integration to reach a higher band. These characteristics align with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student attempts to use some less common vocabulary, such as 'pivotal role', 'contemporary era', and 'space exploration'. However, there are numerous lexical errors, such as spelling mistakes ('poerful', 'wapon', 'unidentify', 'enhanced', 'lanched', 'numorous', 'satelites', 'junks', 'sicence', 'harms'), incorrect word forms ('well-beings', 'life-style' used inconsistently), and awkward collocations ('investigate space explorations'). Because these errors in spelling and word choice are frequent throughout the text, the lexical resource is best evaluated at a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Some people believe that science is the significant subject to improve people's life-style; however, there are some advantages and disadvantages.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors involving verb tenses, prepositions, articles, and clause structures (e.g., 'Thomas Edison who gave bulb', 'science should use to improve', 'without any harms people'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and mean that error-free sentences are not in the majority, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors well.
