Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve human lives. The student clearly states a position ('I whole heartidly accord with the statement'). However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and relies on sweeping generalisations and conversational asides, such as 'Is there any supportive point also?'. While the core idea that science should improve lives is explored through examples like atomic energy and medical research, the arguments lack rigorous academic extension. The conclusion briefly reiterates the stance. Overall, the response meets the baseline requirements for addressing all parts of the task, earning a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some organisation with paragraph breaks dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, progression is frequently disrupted by unusual conversational transitions ('Well I whole heartidly accord...', 'Is there any supportive point also? Yes science is. study...'). Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal coherence within the paragraphs is hindered by abrupt shifts in focus and erratic punctuation. These structural and cohesive weaknesses place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, featuring frequent word choice and spelling errors (e.g., 'iota', 'Owning' instead of 'Owing', 'heartidly', 'indiviuals', 'convience', 'Sciene', 'exits'). While the student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'paradigm shift', the high density of lexical inaccuracies ('to many hazardous result', 'always do inventions') causes strain for the reader. The range is limited and minimally adequate for expressing simple thoughts on the topic, corresponding to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, and tense usage, such as 'science always do inventions', 'It invention was made', and 'every scientists do work'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after commas and periods, and broken sentence boundaries. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from reaching a higher band, reflecting a Band 4.5 performance.
