Student answer (Band 5.0)

As we know that science is growing rapidly in many fields and this improvement is consider that it is benefical for people .

This is a general statement no one is sure that every step of scientist is in the favour of mankind and we can not deny that science want,s to improve lives of people . In my opinion somehow i am agree with that statement like; before the advancement in Medical science we are not enable to cure some diseases which inclube Hepatitis B , Pneumonia and Malaria etc . Now due to this achivement of science we are enable to cure these diseases . On the other hand improvement in technology which is also a part of science there are many enviromental problems are generate like, due to yearly updates people many electric appliances are waste because people shift on the new up graded technology so, they threw the old one which is the biggest cause of E-waste . Due to E-waste environment got polluted and cause land pollution . Furthermore, we know that the science is trying to explore our solar system . For that purpose they use rockets and satellites .When the mission is completed the waste of rocket is thrown into the ocean which is not good for marine species or when satellites got loose its orbit so, there are chances that this satellites fell back on earth and cause big distruction .

At the end science is trying its best but no one is sure that this success is in favour of people or not

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives, taking a somewhat balanced stance. The student presents relevant ideas, such as medical advancements curing diseases like Hepatitis B and Pneumonia, balanced against negative consequences like electronic waste and marine pollution from space exploration. However, the development of these ideas is rather limited and lacks depth. While a clear position is established in the introduction, the body paragraphs struggle to fully expand the arguments, and the conclusion is very brief and simplistic. Overall, the response addresses all parts of the task though some ideas are under-developed, aligning closely with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear attempts to structure the arguments, moving from medical benefits to technological and environmental drawbacks. However, paragraphing is a significant issue: the entire main body of the essay is presented as one massive, unbroken paragraph, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive or awkwardly integrated, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the lack of proper paragraph breaks prevents the text from achieving a higher band score, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'advancement in Medical science', 'enviromental problems', and 'marine species'. However, there are numerous word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'benefical', 'inclube', 'achivement', 'up graded', and 'distruction'. Less common lexical items are attempted, but errors in spelling and collocation are noticeable throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication. These features reflect the characteristics of Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ability to form conditional or multi-clause sentences. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency, such as 'As we know that science is growing... this improvement is consider that it is benefical', 'we are not enable', and 'this satellites fell back'. Punctuation is particularly problematic, with commas frequently misplaced before conjunctions or missing entirely. Because errors are frequent and sometimes cause difficulty for the reader, this performance corresponds to a Band 5.
