Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing that the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The main ideas, such as medical advancements improving health and technological conveniences saving time, are extended and supported with examples like MRI scans and household appliances. However, there is a tendency to over-generalize in places, and some ideas, particularly in the third paragraph regarding economic impacts, drift slightly from the core theme of 'improving people's lives' into broader economic benefits. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear and consistent position throughout, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to medical advancements, household/technological efficiency, societal and economic impacts, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS', 'FURTHERMORE', and 'TO BE MORE SPECIFIC'. However, some referencing is slightly faulty or mechanical, and paragraphing could be managed with greater flexibility. The capitalization of the entire first paragraph and the title-style heading also negatively impact the overall visual and structural presentation. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including less common items such as 'LOGISTIC HUBS', 'INFRASTRUCTURE', and 'ARTIFICAL INTELLIEGENCE' (though suffering from spelling errors). There are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'IMPROTANT', 'PROVID', 'QUALITIY', and 'COMPETITVE'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory phrases. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb forms and missing articles (e.g., 'should use to improve', 'help to recover individuals', 'less time consuming for solve'). Punctuation is also affected by the unusual use of all-caps in the opening section and some run-on sentences. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.5 a fair assessment.
