The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's rapidly evolving world, the issue about the goal of science in providing better life to the individual's has sparked considerable debate, with opinions divide on whether it is beneficial or harmful. While both side of the argument holds merit, I am strongly inclined to agree with the view of improving individual lives. This essay will present compelling reasons and real world examples in support of my perspective.
To begin with, one of the most convincing reasons why I support this view is that our daily work gets easier by providing better machinery, This factor has far reaching implications, especially in the context of farming. For intance, new machines that harvest the crops automatically offers a great time save and peace in individual's life. It clearly illustrates how this outcome has manifested real life. Morover, it demonstrates how the benefits of this approach can significantly outweigh any potential drawbacks. Therefore this strenghten the case for in support of my perspectives about the statement as a logical and forward thinking stance.
Equally important is the fact that it saves the life of a person who have a serious disease by providing good machines, which further reinforces my belief. This becomes even more relevenat when considering a person who recently had a serious injury on his head and his life depends solely on machines. If there were better tools or machines to treat it, his life would save, where the practical advantages are evident. Overtime, such outcomes contribute to long term stability, progress, or individual well-being. As such this perspective not only aligns with practical need but also reflects sound judgemnet in addressing modern chalnages.
In conclusion, although it is understable that some may take a different view, I strongly believe that there must be a strong focus on improving individuals life. This reasons above supported by both logic and evidence make this position both reasonable and well-substantiated. With clear advantages and measurable impact, this opinion stands as the more convencing and constructing one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear and consistent position in agreement with the statement that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. Main ideas are introduced regarding daily labor-saving machinery and medical life-saving technology. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and relies heavily on vague generalisations rather than deeply extended argumentation. For instance, the discussion on farming equipment states that it 'offers a great time save and peace in individual's life' without elaborating on the broader socioeconomic impacts. Similarly, the medical example remains relatively basic. Despite these limitations in depth, all parts of the task are addressed, and a clear overarching stance is maintained throughout the essay. This performance fits comfortably into Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the response into a logical introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on distinct examples (farming and medicine), and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'Equally important', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'how this outcome has manifested real life' and the repetitive use of 'this factor' and 'this view'. Paragraph transitions are present but can feel somewhat formulaic. Overall, the logical progression is clear enough to follow without difficulty, meeting the criteria for Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and collocations such as 'far reaching implications', 'long term stability', and 'well-substantiated'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation throughout the text. Examples include 'opinions divide' instead of 'divided', 'for intance', 'time save' instead of 'time saver', 'relevenat', 'judgemnet', 'chalnages', 'understable', and 'convencing'. Furthermore, phrasing like 'makes this position both reasonable and well-substantiated' shows a mix of appropriate academic vocabulary alongside awkward expressions. These errors do not impede communication but restrict the score to Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'If there were better tools or machines to treat it, his life would save'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, voice, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'the issue about... has sparked', 'both side... holds', 'individual's' (plural needed), 'a person who have', 'his life would save' (passive voice needed), and punctuation issues. While these errors are noticeable and detract from the polish of the writing, they rarely impede overall communication. The mix of structures combined with frequent non-systematic errors places this response at Band 5.5.
