Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that the main goal of science should be to improve individual's life. While it is true that with the new innovation has great impact on human's lives.I firmly agree with the view that scientific technique should be used to make people's lives uncomplicated due to several compelling reasons.

To commence with , one of the most significant reason is that in the ancient time there was no electricity and human faced lots of difficulties , but with the invention of light the lives of individuals become easy.In other words , with the develpoment of electricity the modern innovation likemobilephones, televisions are also invented. For instance , in past people used candles and divas to decorate there houses or to do word , yet with the coming of electricity their is no need to do that. This clearly demonstrate that the science play crucial role in everyone lives.

Moreover, another crucial factor to consider is that medical facilities which were very difficult to get in past are become easily available with the new technology. Furthermore, earlier there were no medicines for disease such as cancer, diabetes , brain tumor etcetra because of which many lost their lives due to lack of medical facilities. A particular good example of this is that according to 'Times of India ' report the death rate is decreased by 90% from 1955 to 2026 because of developement of proper hospital in every city. Thus it is evident that science has a great impact on saving the lives of human beings.

In Conclusion , although some may argue the technology has a negative effect on everyone's life. I strongly believe that science play crucial role to improve people's lives because of the reasons discuss above. Therefore, every person should apprciate the new innovation and invention by the scientists.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by arguing that the primary aim of science should indeed be to improve people's lives. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The student supports this stance with relevant arguments, such as the historical impact of electricity and modern medical advancements, citing a specific albeit generalized reference to a report. However, the development of ideas leans towards generalization, and some arguments are slightly repetitive or lack deeper elaboration. For instance, the discussion on electricity touches upon light and household chores but does not explore broader societal implications. While all parts of the task are addressed, the depth of extension places this response comfortably at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized effectively to separate main ideas, such as the shift from domestic technology to medical advancements. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. There are noticeable punctuation and spacing errors around cohesive devices, such as 'To commence with , one of the most significant reason is...' and missing spaces after periods. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in phrases like 'their is no need to do that' and pronouns lacking precise antecedents. These mechanical and referencing flaws prevent the essay from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'uncomplicated', 'compelling reasons', and 'medical facilities'. However, there are frequent word-form and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'individual's life' instead of individuals' lives, 'develpoment', 'likemobilephones', 'apprciate', and 'etcetera'. Collocations are sometimes awkward, such as 'do word' instead of doing work or chores. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is rarely impeded, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'While it is true that...' and '...because of which many lost their lives...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('the lives of individuals become easy', 'the science play crucial role'), articles ('in past', 'in the ancient time'), and pluralization ('with the new innovation has great impact'). Punctuation errors are also prominent, particularly missing spaces after commas and periods. While complex structures are attempted, they are often flawed, making Band 5.0 the most appropriate descriptor for this category.
