Student answer (Band 4.0)

The topic shows the importance of the aim of science being to improve people's lives. I strongly disagree with this statement.

Overall, there is no concept regarding the people's lives and science because both are different concepts. Like, science is the experiments that we perform to learn new things, like plants, animals, etc., and human lives are different, like behaviors, attitudes, and feelings.

Firstly, when we talk about our ancestors' lives, which are so perfect, and at that time there are no concepts of science, we should not decide to choose what the perfect things to live are or not; however, science provides information regarding plants and animals and other things. Science teaches us how to survive in an environment. For instance, science provides techniques to survive in an ecosystem, like hunting.

Secondly, science is the education that everyone should learn in the school while we talk about human lives, so these are different. Improving people's lives is the other way, like motivation and helping others with money. For example, science should provide confidence, not money. We live in a world of money, not science. Furthermore, science teaches you how to create a motorbike or car but not how to live.

In my conclusion, science is the source of knowledge for everyone, and they should learn how to create things using techniques, but these activities did not provide you with knowledge of lives. They cannot improve people's lives because they are the subject, not money or a source of income to improve our lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives, stating a clear position of strong disagreement. However, the development of ideas is weak and heavily confused by unclear definitions of science and human life. The writer asserts that 'science is the experiments that we perform... and human lives are different, like behaviors, attitudes, and feelings,' which fails to logically engage with how scientific advancements impact society. The arguments regarding ancestors and money are disjointed and lack logical support. While the student attempts to present arguments, the ideas remain underdeveloped and confusing, aligning with Band 4.0 performance where the response only minimally addresses the core prompt due to a lack of coherent conceptual understanding.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic visual structure, but the progression of ideas is extremely faulty. Sentences and paragraphs fail to flow logically from one to the next. For instance, the transition from discussing ancestors to school education lacks any logical bridge. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the overuse of 'like' for giving examples and the mechanical transition 'Secondly, science is the education...'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's line of reasoning. Overall, the organizational structure is insufficient to achieve a clear progression of thought, reflecting Band 4.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple words like 'science,' 'people,' 'lives,' and 'different.' There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation throughout the text, such as 'there are no concepts of science,' 'decide to choose what the perfect things to live are,' and 'these activities did not provide you with knowledge of lives.' These lexical inadequacies and awkward phrasings strain the reader and obscure the intended meaning, which corresponds closely to the Band 4.0 descriptor for lexical resource where vocabulary is basic and errors frequently occur.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The essay displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple and repetitive clauses joined by basic conjunctions. Attempts at complex sentences often result in severe grammatical errors and confusing syntax, such as 'when we talk about our ancestors' lives, which are so perfect, and at that time there are no concepts of science, we should not decide to choose what the perfect things to live are or not.' Frequent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation impede readability and occasionally distort meaning. This level of grammatical control fits the Band 4.0 criteria.
