Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that the primary purpose of science should be to enhance people's quality of life. I largly agree wih this statement.
Science plays a crucial role in modern society, I believe that scientific research should pursue knowledge and address other challenges. One most important aspect of science is that scientific discoveries can help in human health and well-being. For example, advances in medicines have led to effective treatment for serious diseases. However, developments in technology have made communication better and advancement in science have made transportation and education much easier and more convenient. Science made huge innovations in technology like AI which would make people's lives more practical and proffesional. These innovation demonstrate that scientific researach have significant impact on human lives
Science should not be limited however, basic scientific research is essential because it increases our understanding of the natural world. Moreover, researchers study space, physics and marine lofe whithout knowing how they used their findings in real world. Overtime, these advancements help scientists to solve future problems.
In addition, scientific research can play an important role in dealing with global obstacles such as climate change, food shortages and environmental pollution. These areas may not improve people's lives immediately but they can help future generation and create a more sustainable world.
In conclusion, I agree that improving people's lives should be one of the most essential aim of science. However, scientific research should also be encouraged for the purpose of gaining knowledge and addressing long-term challenges as these areas can ultimately benefit the humanity as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout. The writer agrees that science should primarily improve lives while acknowledging that basic research and knowledge acquisition also hold long-term value. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as advances in medicine, technology, and AI. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise or state points briefly without deeper elaboration. For instance, the mention of 'space, physics and marine lofe' is relevant but lacks full exploration. Overall, the task is well addressed, earning a Band 7.0 according to the descriptors for covering all parts with a clear, supported position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured into coherent paragraphs, with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs addressing different facets of the topic, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments regarding immediate human benefits versus long-term scientific exploration. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional cohesion lapses occur at the sentence level. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.5 descriptors, demonstrating clear progression and organisation despite some mechanical cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'sustainable world', 'environmental pollution', and 'scientific research'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'largly', 'wih', 'proffesional', 'researach', 'lofe', 'whithout', and 'benefit the humanity'. These errors slightly diminish the precision of the writing, though they do not impede overall communication. The writer demonstrates sufficient flexibility to convey complex ideas, but inaccuracies in spelling and collocation prevent the score from reaching Band 7.0. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is well-justified for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There is evidence of good control in several complex sentences; however, a number of grammatical errors and punctuation slips persist, such as comma splices ('Science plays a crucial role in modern society, I believe that...') and subject-verb agreement issues ('scientific researach have'). While these errors are noticeable and occur with some frequency, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. Because the student successfully combines simple and complex structures alongside minor control lapses, this performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 criteria.
