Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that the ultimate goal of science should be to improve individuals lives. I completely agree with this viewpoint because it offers substantial benefits for society.
One of the strongest reasons why I agree with this viewpoint is that science contributes a huge to improve individual daily life. By placingthe main importance to people's lives, science can make it easier. As the countries all industry are related with science and people run their lives by working in different industries, fosters of these sectors will definitely improve citizen's overall well-being. If science focus more in the health industry of a country the community will get e better service in health care. Science also can develop the education system of a nation, by providing or innovating more useful laboratory equipement or technological innovation. For instance, modern education is highly depended on multimedia projector which is a remarkable innovation of science, by this innovation many educational institutions can provide a lively environment of study.
Another compelling justification for my statement is that, by focusing more on the science industry policymakers can create more employment opportunities. This is primarily because science can rapidly change a countries infrastructure. Authorities can create industries connected with science or technology which may create employment requirement for the jobless citizens. These might aid to countries overall revenue of tax and GDP. As a consequence the quality of individuals live will eventually develop. A compelling example of this can be observed in Japan, where government create many science related industry and it does not only boosted the countries productivity but also improve citizen's lives.
To sum up, I firmly believe that most important aim of science should be people's lives as it contributes significantly to improve overall society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt effectively by taking a clear position that the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The writer presents relevant arguments, such as the benefits of science in healthcare and education, as well as its impact on industrial development and employment. While some of the supporting explanations are slightly repetitive or general, the main ideas are adequately extended and supported with an example from Japan. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0. Because the ideas are relevant and properly supported, this earns a solid Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation with a standard four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the strongest reasons', 'Another compelling justification', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader through the progression of ideas. However, referencing and transitional phrases occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or awkward, as seen in sentences like 'As the countries all industry are related with science'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, resulting in an overall coherent flow that fits the Band 6 descriptors well.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'compelling justification', 'employment opportunities', and 'technological innovation'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'contributes a huge to improve' instead of 'contributes enormously to improving', and 'individuals live' instead of 'individuals' lives'. Spelling and morphological issues, like 'equipement' and 'depended' instead of 'dependent', also occur. These errors do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary performance firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the response. Examples include missing prepositions, subject-verb agreement issues ('where government create' instead of 'where the government created'), and incorrect word forms ('focus more in' instead of 'focus more on'). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, leading to run-on structures. Although the meaning remains understandable, the high frequency of non-systematic errors prevents the score from reaching Band 6.5, making Band 6.0 an accurate assessment.
