Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt by taking a strong position that the main goal of science should be to improve people's lives. The writer attempts to support this viewpoint with relevant examples, such as healthcare advancements, vaccines during the coronavirus pandemic, and transportation improvements. However, a major issue is the length requirement. The text contains only 158 words, which falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum for Academic Task 2. Consequently, the ideas are under-developed and the task is only partially addressed in terms of breadth and depth. In accordance with the assessment criteria for under-length responses, this severely limits the Task Achievement score, resulting in a band 4.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a basic logical organisation with a clear introduction stating the writer's position, followed by body paragraphs presenting supporting arguments. The writer attempts to use cohesive devices and transition words, such as 'First,' 'Additionally,' and 'For instance,' to guide the reader through the text. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped—the second body paragraph runs into a separate thought awkwardly, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the abrupt transition in the final paragraph starting with 'Unlikey, focus on space development...'. While there is some logical progression, the overall structure is disrupted by the incomplete and truncated nature of the response, corresponding to a band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for a short response, attempting some less common items such as 'revolution,' 'healthcare opportunities,' 'epitome,' and 'green vehicles.' However, there are notable word-choice errors, awkward collocations, and spelling mistakes throughout the text. Examples include 'make everyone's live' instead of 'lives,' 'acess to commute' instead of 'access to commuting,' and 'Unlikey' instead of 'Unlikely.' These lexical inaccuracies and limited control over word formation somewhat hinder the precision of the writing, placing it at a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Opinions are divided whether the main goal of science should be...' and 'scientific technologies help allow doctors to create and examine the symptoms of disease before getting worse.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing that detract from the quality of the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'scientist must work' and 'Scientist's efforts are worthwhile, we are now acess,' as well as missing prepositions and articles. Although communication is not entirely impeded, the high frequency of errors across a limited range of complex structures results in a band 5.0.
