IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate regarding the contribution of science for humanity. It is often considered that enhancing the quality of life is the major responsibilty. I agree to this statement and in this essay, I will give reasons in favor of my argument.

To begin with, I believe that one significant factor is research in pathogenesis to identify the root cause of the diseases that have a deleterious effect on the health. It is particularly important because humans are also becoming more prone to several infectious microorganisms that never existed in the past. One of the primary example is COVID-19 which spread globally, and was a leading cause of deaths about a few years ago. Various vaccines developed using science proved to be effective in reducing the death toll. In this way, science continues to make a positive impact.

Another reason is the development of objects that help individuals with certain disabilities to carry out the normal lives. For instance, devices that are designed to improve hearing ability, mobility or vision are crucial for particular individuals. It is attributed to the fact that these facilities have become a necessity, and science and technology are playing a key role in this aspect.

Conversely, some people contend that making new discoveries and trying to bring back the extinct animals to life is comparably more important. Proponents of such belief state that a number of other species and places also need scientific intervention apart from humans. One example is that some scientist are trying to bring back entinct species by DNA modification and genetic engineering. Ultimately, numerous other living beings will also benefit.

Although science can play role in many innovations and improving life expentency for other species, I assume that the primary job which is non-negotiable is to do research on health declining factors such as pathogens and diseases, and new devices to improve living standards for the special individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and well-developed position that the primary aim of science should be to improve human lives. The essay is appropriately extended with relevant examples, such as medical research into pathogenesis, the development of vaccines like COVID-19, and assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities. Furthermore, the writer acknowledges a counter-argument regarding genetic engineering and extinct species, before reaffirming their central thesis in the conclusion. Ideas are logically supported and well-developed, matching the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped logically into distinct paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used effectively to signal transitions between ideas, such as "To begin with," "Another reason," "Conversely," and "Although science can play role." Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the argument. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion meets the criteria for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing less common lexical items such as "deleterious effect," "pathogenesis," and "genetic engineering." There are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as writing "responsibilty" instead of responsibility, "primary example" instead of primary example (minor collocation), "entinct" instead of extinct, and "life expentency" instead of life expectancy. However, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings, and these minor errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The candidate employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or concessive clauses such as "Although science can play role in many innovations..." There is good overall control of grammar and punctuation, though a few minor errors persist, such as article omission ("play role" instead of "play a role") and minor prepositional inconsistencies. The majority of sentences are grammatically sound, and the occasional errors do not impede communication. The control demonstrated corresponds well to a Band 7.0.
