Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that science has a primarily positive impact on human lives through decision-making, time-saving, and innovation. The student attempts to extend ideas using examples and references, such as Taylor theory and AI. However, some ideas are underdeveloped, and the reasoning is occasionally vague or overly generalized, as seen in the rather sweeping assertion about innovation and 'thinking hats.' While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the depth of development aligns best with a Band 6.0 performance, where relevant ideas are presented but some remain unclear or thinly supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and body paragraphs marked by transition words like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. However, paragraphing and logical progression are hindered by mechanical errors and abrupt transitions. For example, sentences such as 'However, I believe that science have contributed...' are incorrectly separated from the opening sentences, disrupting flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used rather rigidly. This level of organisation and cohesion sits comfortably at Band 5.0, as there is basic organisation, but progression is affected by awkward linking and formatting.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'cognitive capabilities,' 'plausibility,' and 'divergent thinking.' However, there are frequent word-choice errors, incorrect forms, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'detriorated' instead of deteriorated, 'manhfacturing' instead of manufacturing, and 'onces' instead of ones. Words are sometimes misused grammatically, such as 'purpose of science is serve' and 'thoryout you can not only did.' The vocabulary range is adequate for the task, but noticeable errors in spelling and collocation place it at a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors that occasionally impede understanding. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'science have contributed,' missing auxiliary verbs such as 'we couldnt be able,' and fragmented sentences like 'Firstly science improves the human cognitive capabilities it helps...' Punctuation and article usage are also problematic. Because the errors are frequent and recurrent across simple and complex forms, this performance aligns with Band 5.0.
