The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many people argue that focus of advancement in science should be to reduce problems in people's life. I strongly agree with this statement as there are many diseases still in the world, we have no cure of. Furthermore keeping our enviroment safe is also linked to knowledge of science.

In past, when humans did not have enough knowledge they were not able to handle even mild fever. Furthermore, the way the surgeries were done in past lacked proper hygene. The equipment used were nightmare for patients as no anesthesia was given before the procedure. Many diseases that are cured today with a simple tablet were considered a formidable challenge for doctors of the past. Hepatitas is one of the example because of which a lot of people lost their life. With advancement in science they way patients are now treated has improved every tool is sterilized before use evey injection that is used discarded afterwards.

Moreover the importance of science is not only limited to medicines and hygene habits but also our environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response is significantly under-length, containing only 173 words compared to the required minimum of 250 words. This imposes a strict ceiling on the Task Achievement score, as the prompt's instruction to give reasons and include relevant examples cannot be fully developed. Although the writer takes a clear position agreeing with the statement, the ideas presented in the body paragraphs remain underdeveloped. For instance, the mention of diseases like hepatitis and environmental protection are introduced but abruptly cut off without adequate elaboration. Due to the failure to meet the minimum length requirement and the resulting under-development of ideas, this criterion cannot exceed Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall progression, beginning with an introduction that states the writer's position, followed by historical medical examples and a brief concluding thought. However, paragraphing is problematic; the response ends abruptly mid-thought on a single sentence forming an incomplete final paragraph. Cohesive devices are used simply, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover', but referencing is occasionally loose, as seen with ambiguous pronouns. While the logical arrangement is discernible, the lack of a proper conclusion and underdeveloped transitions prevent the response from achieving a higher score. It fits the Band 5 descriptor for showing some organization but lacking clear overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related words such as 'advancement', 'diseases', 'surgeries', 'anesthesia', and 'sterilized'. However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'enviroment' instead of environment, 'hygene' instead of hygiene, 'Hepatitas' instead of hepatitis, and 'evey' instead of every. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and these frequent mechanical and lexical errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, aligning the response with the Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or relative-style clauses ('when humans did not have enough knowledge they were not able to handle...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation omissions, including missing articles ('focus of advancement', 'in past'), comma splices, and incorrect prepositions ('cure of' instead of cure for). Complex sentence structures are often faulty, and these errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The control of grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.
