Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives, taking a position that agrees with the statement while introducing caveats regarding environmental harm and luxury. The writer attempts to develop ideas through examples such as electrical items, clothing, and construction sites. However, the development is somewhat limited and the arguments in the body paragraphs tend to wander, shifting abruptly from lifestyle improvements to the misuse of natural resources. Consequently, the position is not always clearly sustained throughout, and some supporting ideas lack full elaboration. This places the performance within Band 5, as the task is addressed, but the ideas remain partially developed and the overall position becomes slightly muddled by the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic organizational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and paragraphing is attempted. However, overall progression is hindered by awkward transitions and confusing sentence connections. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Subsequently, there is science behind each and everything' and 'After a lot of discoveries since many decades' feel unnatural and fail to logically guide the reader. Cohesive devices are frequently misused or clumsy, such as 'It convience the major point' in the conclusion. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical flow of arguments between paragraphs. This overall lack of smooth progression aligns with Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'amoung', 'transpotation', 'luxirous', 'unecessary asthetic', and 'envitronment'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary such as 'digital transformation', 'semi-urban', and 'enourmously', but these attempts are often marred by spelling mistakes or awkward phrasing. While the range is minimally adequate to convey a basic meaning, the frequency of errors restricts the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency. Examples include 'can must be the major role', 'many of the scientists had developed', 'people usually utilizing the understanding science', and 'I will not going to disagree'. Punctuation is also problematic in places, with run-on constructions and comma splices. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band, making Band 5 an accurate reflection of the current grammatical control.
