Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student addresses the prompt by arguing that science should improve people's lives and alter our environment, supporting this with examples such as transport, defense, and electronic devices. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the response suffers from a minor task failure regarding length: it contains 246 words, which falls slightly short of the mandatory 250-word minimum. This results in a necessary penalty under Task Achievement. Furthermore, while the ideas regarding computers and mobile phones are relevant, they remain somewhat generalized and lack deeper elaboration. Consequently, these factors limit the development of the response, aligning it best with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, indicating an attempt at standard paragraphing. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices, such as starting multiple sentences with 'With usage of science', 'It can utilize', or 'Moreover'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transitions between ideas feel abrupt. While there is a basic overarching structure, the mechanical nature of the cohesive ties and occasional awkward transitions place this criterion firmly within the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, featuring frequent reliance on everyday words like 'science', 'lives', and 'improve'. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'ambition of science has become an debated topic' (an debated), 'indivudual life' (individual), 'prespective' (perspective), and 'favorable creation' (favourable/useful invention). The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'advantageous' and 'defense', but inaccuracy in word choice and spelling restricts the range to a minimally adequate level. This matches the characteristics of a Band 5.0 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and emerging complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex forms are frequently faulty or unnatural. Examples of grammatical errors include 'science should become a source of betterment of indivudual life', 'i strongly agree with that the importance', 'It can utilize for the defense' (passive voice error), and 'computers is an essential invention' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation and capitalization errors, such as lowercase 'i' and missing spaces after commas, also occur regularly. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, justifying a Band 5.0 score.
