Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the primary aim of science should be to improve lives, presenting a clear position and supporting it with arguments regarding healthcare and daily convenience. However, the development of ideas is limited by frequent grammar and vocabulary issues that obscure meaning in places. Furthermore, the response is 247 words long, falling just short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which incurs a slight penalty under task achievement. While the main parts of the task are addressed, the lack of sufficient length and the somewhat repetitive and under-developed examples restrict the score to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt at logical organisation. Paragraphing is generally present, but the progression of ideas within paragraphs is often disrupted by mechanical and faulty cohesive devices, such as 'One main reson is science should focus on health reasons improving human life as its contribute the healthcare.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, and transitions between sentences feel abrupt. Although an overall structure is visible, the heavy reliance on faulty cohesive devices and lack of smooth progression place this performance firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student displays a limited and basic range of vocabulary adequate for the task, but uses noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are numerous spelling, word-choice, and morphological errors throughout the text, such as 'amking' instead of 'making', 'reson' instead of 'reason', 'Scentic' instead of 'Scientific', 'illnes' instead of 'illness', and 'threnting' instead of 'life-threatening'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary often result in unnatural phrasing or incorrect collocations. These frequent lexical inaccuracies restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is poor. The text contains frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing that impede communication in several places, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'scientific development have played'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'science should focus on health reasons improving human life as its contribute the healthcare'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, as seen in the lowercase 'i' used for the pronoun 'I'. Because errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
