Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear and consistent stance that science should primarily aim to improve people's lives. Main ideas are introduced, such as advancements in the medical field, communication, and food production. However, many of these ideas are under-developed and lack sufficient extension or detailed support, which is characteristic of a Band 5. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the text contains only 235 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum specified for Task 2. This under-length impacts the overall development and completeness of the response, limiting it to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing some basic organisational structure. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by abrupt shifts and poorly integrated sentences, such as 'eventually, science always protect environment to people live in clean environment.' Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as repetitive transitions like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', alongside misuse of cohesive links like 'hence'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks smooth transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, placing the text firmly within the Band 5 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally limited and basic, yet minimally adequate to express general ideas about science and technology. Words like 'important', 'change', and 'better' are repeated frequently. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'better people living standard', 'scientish' instead of scientists, and 'nano seconds'. While the writer attempts some less common terms like 'vaccination', 'fossil fuel', and 'natural diaster', spelling errors and inaccuracies in word formation are frequent and occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning with Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are often faulty and ungrammatical. For instance, 'Science is a powerful way which can use to change the world' contains passive voice errors and missing subjects. Punctuation is weak, with multiple run-on sentences, missing capitalisation ('Usa', 'corona virus'), and periods misplaced. Frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('science have improve') and tense inconsistencies, are present throughout the essay, though meaning can usually be deciphered, supporting a Band 5 score.
