IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.5)
The proposition that the paramount objective of scientific empirical pursuit should be the tangible enhancement of human welfare is a deeply compelling one. While I acknowledge that pure, curiosity-driven research is vital for expanding the horizons of human knowledge, I firmly believe that the ultimate validation and most critical aim of science must always be to improve people's lives and mitigate global crises.
The primary argument for prioritizing human welfare in scientific pursuits is that applied science provides immediate solutions to the most severe existential threats facing humanity. Throughout history, the most celebrated scientific breakthroughs have been those that directly alleviated suffering and extended human life expectancy. In the field of medicine, the development of antibiotics and vaccines has eradicated lethal diseases that once decimated global populations. Similarly, in agricultural science, innovations like high-yielding crop varieties and advanced irrigation techniques during the Green Revolution effectively averted widespread famines. When scientific resources are directed toward practical human challenges, they yield immediate, life-saving dividends that justify the massive public and private funding these fields require.
Furthermore, framing human improvement as the core mission of science provides an essential ethical compass for technological innovation. Scientific discovery possesses a dual nature; without a strong humanitarian mandate, advanced research can easily be weaponized or exploited for destructive ends. For instance, breakthroughs in nuclear physics can either generate clean, limitless energy to power cities or be used to construct weapons of mass destruction. By strictly aligning the primary aim of science with the betterment of society, the global scientific community is structurally encouraged to prioritize peaceful, constructive innovations—such as renewable energy grids and artificial intelligence for disease diagnosis—over harmful or purely commercial endeavors.
This is not to dismiss the immense value of theoretical or basic science, which seeks to understand the universe without any immediate practical application. Discoveries in abstract fields like quantum mechanics or space exploration often seem completely disconnected from daily human life at the time of their inception. However, history demonstrates that even the most abstract scientific journeys ultimately culminate in pragmatic benefits for society. For example, the mathematical principles of quantum physics eventually laid the foundation for modern microprocessors, lasers, and MRI machines used in hospitals today. Therefore, even curiosity-driven science is not an exception to the rule; rather, it represents a long-term investment whose final destination remains the enhancement of human capability and comfort.
In conclusion, while all scientific discovery is inherently valuable, science does not operate in a vacuum. The true metric of scientific progress is not merely the accumulation of abstract data, but the degree to which that data minimizes human suffering and elevates our standard of living. By keeping human improvement as its focal point, science fulfills its highest calling as an engine for global progress and ethical advancement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position and supporting it with well-developed ideas. The writer acknowledges the counter-argument regarding curiosity-driven science before successfully synthesizing how even abstract research ultimately serves the overarching goal of improving human welfare. Examples such as antibiotics, the Green Revolution, and quantum mechanics are thoughtfully deployed to extend and justify the arguments throughout the essay. The stance remains clear and consistent from the introduction to the concluding paragraph, meeting all criteria for a high band performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Ideas are logically sequenced and progress naturally from one paragraph to the next. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and unobtrusively, as seen in transition phrases like 'Furthermore' and 'This is not to dismiss'. Paragraphing is managed effectively, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct, clearly signalled sub-theme supporting the overall thesis. Referencing and substitution are handled smoothly, maintaining a high level of textual flow and readability throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.0
The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary with skillful use of uncommon items. Phrases such as 'paramount objective', 'empirical pursuit', 'existential threats', and 'curiosity-driven research' reflect a sophisticated control of language appropriate for academic discourse. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, but word choice and collocation are generally precise and natural, allowing the writer to convey subtle nuances effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.5
A wide range of complex structures is used with a high degree of flexibility and accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, featuring sophisticated subordination, relative clauses, and participial phrases (e.g., 'Discoveries in abstract fields like quantum mechanics or space exploration often seem completely disconnected...'). Grammar and punctuation are tightly controlled, with only very rare, non-systematic slips that never impede communication.
