Student answer (Band 5.0)

The most essential goal of science is to make some positive changes in an individual's life. In this essay, I will clearly explain my opinion about how science is playing a vital role in the development of human's life.

Yes, I think the most important aim of science is to improve human life. The first thing that comes to my mind after thinking about how science is helping to improve the lives of individuals is the vital role of medical science in saving the lives of people who are fighting with any disease and are about to die with the effects of the disease. They are then provided with proper treatment and get rid of the disease so that they can live and enjoy a healthy life and not face any of the medical problems again regarding this disease. One of my friend's mom was suffering from a disease called cancer, which is a really terrible disease, and if the patient is not given proper treatment at time, the affected person may die, but my friend and his father consulted with a medical specialist at the right time, and his mom was provided with proper treatment, and with time she recovered, and now she is living a healthy life.

The other scientific research that helps in the improvement of the local people's lives is their research that helps to make the medicines that are mostly used to grow most of the crops, because nowadays crops do not grow naturally. If crops are grown naturally, it will take a lot of time, but to fulfil the needs of humans, many of the crops must be grown in a shorter time, and the only way to make the crops ready enough to be used they are grown whith the help of medicines that help to grow crops in shorter time and also make sure that these crops are not harmful for humans even they are grown with the help of medicines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the primary aim of science is to improve human lives. The student supports this stance with two main areas: medical science and agricultural technology. However, the development of ideas lacks balance and academic depth. The first body paragraph relies heavily on a personal anecdote about a friend's mother who survived cancer, which is slightly repetitive and conversational in tone. The second body paragraph attempts to discuss agricultural science and crop growth, but the explanation is somewhat convoluted and under-developed, particularly regarding how medicines are used to grow crops. The essay also ends abruptly mid-sentence, which leaves the conclusion incomplete. Overall, the response meets the basic requirements of addressing all parts of the task, but the execution is limited and lacks full academic extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a basic overall progression of ideas, starting with an introduction, moving to two body paragraphs, and attempting a conclusion. However, paragraphing and cohesive links show significant flaws. The introduction is very brief and conversational. The second body paragraph is extremely long, dense, and difficult to follow, containing multiple ideas jammed into run-on sentences without adequate internal transitions. Furthermore, the essay trails off abruptly in the final conclusion line ("In conclusion, i think if sceience continues to wo"), meaning that logical progression and cohesion break down completely at the end. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of phrases like "proper treatment" hinders smooth readability.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for expressing basic personal opinions, such as "essential goal," "positive changes," "medical specialist," and "consulted." However, there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing, as seen in the repeated use of "proper treatment," "disease," and "help to grow crops." Attempts to use less common vocabulary are either imprecise or result in awkward collocations, such as "medicines that are mostly used to grow most of the crops." There are also noticeable spelling and capitalization errors, including lowercase "i", "sceience", and "whith". While communication is not entirely impeded, the vocabulary range and precision remain at a modest level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. Many sentences are overly long and run-on, characterized by excessive coordination using words like "and" and "because" without proper punctuation breaks (e.g., the long sentence in the second body paragraph beginning with "One of my friend's mom..."). There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ("human's life" instead of "human life" or "human lives", "friend's mom" for a friend's mother) and clumsy clause constructions. Punctuation is weak, particularly manifested in the unfinished sentence at the end of the text. Frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
