IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I agree to this statement around 70%. This is true that science should be improving the lives of humans through new inventions and discoveries either in the filed of developing things that are in terms of health sector or making more feasible facilities for their mobility. Also, science has developed many inventions that are not enviornment friendly, so by deteriorating the sustainability of the atmosphere of the world, science is making contribution in disturbing human life as well. For instance, science created vehicles for easy transcportation of the humanity but the carbon emissions from personalized vehicles is irritating the surroundings and causing an increase in the temperature of the earth which ultimately incraeses the needs for AC in summer season. The same AC's emitte CFC's which again influence the enviornment and it disturbes the human health in many ways such as causing acid rain, disturbing buildings, human health issues in breathing etc. In this way, we are using science for our welfare but because we do not make a focus on environmental sustainability while designing things, we create issues for ourselves that effect us in the long run. Therefore, the scientists should be working to design new things for more environment friendly. Transportation should be used in local ways, that make low carbon emissions. More environment friendly ways should be made in creating plastic, also producin a way to recycle the same plastic once it is of no use, so it does not effect human health in long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreeing to the statement around 70%. Ideas regarding both the positive impacts of science on human life, such as health and mobility, and the negative consequences, such as environmental degradation and climate change, are presented. However, the response falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement (containing 249 words), which unfortunately impacts task achievement. Furthermore, the development of ideas becomes somewhat repetitive around environmental issues and vehicle emissions, leading to a slight lack of full extension in certain areas. Consequently, the response sits comfortably within the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, but due to the minor under-length penalty and slightly limited depth in parts, a score of 5.5 is awarded.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a logical overall progression, moving from an introduction of the student's stance to examples involving vehicles and air conditioning, and concluding with recommendations for scientists. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Also', 'For instance', 'The same AC's', and 'Therefore', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is noticeably deficient; the entire essay is written as one single block of text rather than being divided into a proper introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. This lack of paragraphing significantly hinders the structural flow. Based on these factors, the response demonstrates the characteristics of Band 5.0, where organisation is attempted but lacks proper paragraph breaks and clear overall structuring.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary to communicate ideas about science, health, and the environment, using terms such as 'sustainability', 'carbon emissions', and 'chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)'. However, there are numerous lexical and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'filed' instead of 'field', 'transcportation' (spelling), 'enviornment' (spelling), 'irritating the surroundings' instead of 'harming the environment', 'emitte' instead of 'emit', and 'producin' instead of 'producing'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the score from reaching a higher band. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but the presence of noticeable spelling and word-choice inaccuracies aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like ideas, such as 'In this way, we are using science for our welfare but because we do not make a focus on environmental sustainability... we create issues...'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'I agree to this statement' instead of 'with this statement', 'discovering either in the filed', 'the same AC's emitte CFC's', 'it disturbes', and 'more environment friendly' missing comparative or adverbial structures. Due to the frequent errors that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader and a lack of reliable complex structures, the performance matches the Band 5 criteria.
