IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is often argued that the primary goal of science should be to enchance human life. I largely agree with this statement, Altough i believe that other scientific objectives, such as understanding the universe and protecting the environment, are also significant.
The main reason why improving people's lives should be central aim of science is its direct impact on health and living standards. Medical science, for example, has dramatically increased life expectancy through the development of vaccines, antibiotics, and advanced surgical procedures. Without this research, many diseases that are now curable would still be fatal. Similarly, science has revolutionised daily life through technology. Innovations in agriculture have enabled mass food production, which is far more effcient than traditional farming, while inventions like electricity, the internet, and household appliances have made life more comfortable and productive. In this sense, science is most valuable when it serves humanity directly.
However, it would be short sighted to claim that this is the only important aim. Science is also driven by curosity and the desire to acquire knowledge. Research into space, the origin of the universe, or deep oceans may not improve life immediately, but it satisfies human curiosity and can lead to unexpected benefits in the future. For instance, satellite technology, which was developed for space exploration, is now essential for weather forecasting and global communication.
Furthermore, science has a crucial role in environmental protection, which is not solely about humans. research on climate change, biodiversity, and renewable energy aims to preserve the planet for all species. This is arguably more important in the long term than short term improvements in human comfort.
In conclusion, while the search for knowledge and environmental preservation are vital, I believe that the most important aim of science should remain the improvement of people's lives, as this is where its greatest value and moral justification lie.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether the primary goal of science should be to improve lives, while also acknowledging other valid scientific objectives. The writer maintains a well-developed position throughout the essay. In the second paragraph, the student explores the direct impact of science on health and living standards, citing specific examples such as 'vaccines, antibiotics, and advanced surgical procedures'. The counter-arguments regarding curiosity-driven research and environmental protection are also well-supported with relevant details, such as satellite technology and climate change. Ideas are extended logically and supported with appropriate reasoning, meeting the criteria for a strong band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction and agreement in paragraph one, to the main arguments in paragraphs two and three, and concluding effectively in the final paragraph. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, such as 'Similarly', 'However', and 'Furthermore', ensuring a smooth flow of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. Although referencing is generally clear, a slightly more sophisticated integration of transitional phrases would elevate the cohesion further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Words and phrases such as 'revolutionised daily life', 'mass food production', and 'moral justification' illustrate an awareness of style and collocation. However, there are a few minor lexical errors and typos, such as 'enchance' instead of 'enhance' and 'curosity' instead of 'curiosity'. Furthermore, the capitalization in 'Altough i believe' is incorrect. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings and supports clear communication throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional structures. Sentences such as 'Medical science, for example, has dramatically increased life expectancy through the development of vaccines...' demonstrate good syntactic variety and control. Punctuation and grammar are generally well handled, though there are a few noticeable errors, such as missing capitalization ('Altough i believe'), a missing comma splice or run-in issue in the introduction ('statement, Altough i believe'), and a lowercase 'research' at the beginning of a sentence in the fourth paragraph. Nevertheless, the majority of sentences are error-free, and grammar does not impede communication.
