Student answer (Band 5.0)

In modern society, there is an ongoing debate whether the aim of science. Many argue that the most important aim of science should be to improve individual lives. I completely agree with the statement.

There are two main reasons why I agree with this idea that the aim of science should be to develop people's lives. Perhaps the primary reason why I believe that the aim of science should be benefits individual lives because it particularly offers many good things in human life. In other words, a recent study shows that about 80% of people believe that the aim of science is very necessary for human lives such as boosting their knowledge and adapting creativity. Another significant reason is that the aim of science potentially leads to significant improvements in individual well-being. These good things can include communication such as connecting to other people.

Furthermore, another compelling reason is why I agree with this view. The main reason is that the aim of science is beneficial approach because it brings positive changes to human daily lives. For example, at least survey by "The Daily Star" revels that the majority of people argue that the aim of science is important to human lives because it provides a wide range of social resources. Moreover, the aim of science is an important factor that should be taken into consideration, as it can also impact individual work-life balance.

In conclusion, considering the factors discuss above, i believe that the aim of science should be benefit people's lives because it improves their quality of life, which has a major impact on their daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly taking a position agreeing that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. However, the development of ideas suffers from significant repetition and vague generalisations. Phrases like 'offers many good things in human life' and 'brings positive changes' are repeated frequently without being fully substantiated with concrete examples. While the student attempts to support the position by mentioning knowledge, creativity, and communication, these points remain somewhat superficial and lack the necessary depth and specific illustration for a higher band. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, aligning closely with Band 5 descriptors where ideas are limited and under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay has a recognisable organisational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a mechanical use of cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore, another compelling reason is why I agree with this view.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty or repetitive, leading to a somewhat disjointed flow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as abrupt transitions between general statements and supposed statistical evidence without adequate logical bridging. These features place the response firmly at Band 5 for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like 'aim of science', 'human lives', and 'individual lives' throughout the text. There are also noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'adapting creativity' instead of 'fostering creativity' or 'adapting to new ideas', and 'at least survey' instead of 'a recent survey'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'well-being' and 'work-life balance', the range remains limited and minimally adequate for the task, causing some difficulty for the reader due to awkward collocations and word choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex forms contain noticeable grammatical errors. For example, clauses are often clumsily constructed or left incomplete, such as 'There are two main reasons why I agree with this idea that the aim of science should be to develop people's lives' followed by tautological reasoning. There are also punctuation and lowercase errors, such as starting the final sentence with 'i believe'. Frequent errors in grammar and awkward phrasing cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance at a Band 5 level.
