Student answer (Band 6.5)

For the existence and well-being of individuals, few things are more crucial than scientific advancements. In many developed and developing countries, substantial amounts of money are allocated to improving people’s lives through science, as scientific progress often requires various resources, such as microscopes, computers, and specialized software. Nowadays, many people would agree that contemporary society has expanded beyond its traditional boundaries and will continue to pursue modern innovations to improve people’s quality of life. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that the primary goal of science should be to enhance human well-being.

Scientific innovations are essential for improving people’s lives because they provide facilities and opportunities that may not be available through other means. Moreover, scientific discoveries offer significant benefits to human society, contributing to improvements in almost every sector. As individuals seek progress and a better quality of life through science, sufficient investment in scientific research and development is imperative. If governments and individuals support such investment, many people can benefit considerably. The progress achieved through science in countries such as China and Japan, for instance, demonstrates how scientific development can contribute to improved services and living standards for citizens.

However, under certain circumstances, people may be unable or unwilling to benefit from scientific discoveries because of various challenges. These include financial constraints, poor environmental conditions, technological barriers, limited resources, fear of failure, and a lack of adequate support. Although scientific advancement is widely embraced in many major cities around the world, people in impoverished and developing countries often face serious financial and infrastructural limitations when attempting to adopt new technologies. Therefore, scientific progress is not equally accessible or appealing to everyone. From economic, social, and national perspectives, however, if improving human life is regarded as a fundamental objective, societies should continue to encourage and support scientific innovation.

Ultimately, science should be evaluated according to its impact on humanity. Scientific advancements can provide substantial benefits when they are developed and applied responsibly, with the goal of improving people’s health, living conditions, and overall quality of life. Therefore, I believe that enhancing human well-being should remain one of the central purposes of scientific progress.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt, presenting a clear position throughout the response. The introduction clearly states the writer's stance ('I firmly believe that the primary goal of science should be to enhance human well-being'), which is maintained until the conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant arguments, such as the economic and infrastructural limitations faced by developing countries and examples of scientific progress in China and Japan. While some points could be explored with even greater depth to reach the highest bands, the response fully satisfies the requirements of Band 7 by offering a well-developed, coherent discussion that addresses the extent of agreement with the statement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and a logical progression of ideas throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the introduction of the debate, moving into the benefits of scientific investment, addressing counter-arguments regarding infrastructural and financial barriers, and concluding with a summary stance. Cohesive devices are used effectively and flexibly, as seen with transition words like 'Moreover', 'Although', 'Therefore', and 'Ultimately'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the argument, ensuring that the relationships between ideas are clear to the reader, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student displays a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion. Less common lexical items and academic collocations are used with some awareness of style, such as 'substantial amounts of money', 'contemporary society', 'financial constraints', and 'infrastructural limitations'. Word choice is generally precise, and although there are occasional minor lexical choices, they do not impede communication. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the essay. The lexical control demonstrated comfortably positions this response at Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('If governments and individuals support such investment...') and concessive clauses ('Although scientific advancement is widely embraced...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and there is good control of grammar and punctuation. While a few minor structural repetitions occur, grammar errors are virtually non-existent, and sentence structures are handled securely. This level of syntactic variety and accuracy corresponds directly to a Band 7 performance.
