Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives, although the student's stated position ('I strongly angry with this statement') appears to contradict the subsequent arguments, which actually highlight numerous advantages of science in agriculture, employment, and transportation. The ideas are relevant and attempt to provide examples, such as farming equipment and industrial opportunities, but these are often limited and under-developed due to circular reasoning and a lack of clear focus. Because the content struggles to maintain a consistent, coherent stance and relies on generalizations, it fits within the Band 5 descriptor for partially addressing the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs with basic organizational markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, overall progression is hindered by confusing transitions and poor sentence-to-sentence linking. For instance, the transition from industrial employment to practical student learning lacks logical connection. Referencing is frequently unclear, as seen in vague pronoun usage ('the people are mainly depend upon science. Through science people can make different things...'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is faulty and repetitive, placing the response at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the presence of basic signposting.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and frequently inaccurate. The student uses basic words and phrases repeatedly, such as 'important aim', 'improve people's lives', and 'different things'. There are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'I strongly angry' instead of 'I strongly disagree', 'excessive and more than comfortable', and 'liveliood'. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, these persistent lexical errors and limited control of less common vocabulary restrict the score to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most complex sentence attempts are faulty, resulting in run-on sentences and grammatical fragmentation, such as 'In recent years, science plays a crucial role in the improvement of the new generations life so science and technology make people's lives excessive and more than comfortable.' There are frequent errors in tense usage ('science plays', 'plays and crucial role'), subject-verb agreement, and prepositions ('while we study science from that time...'). These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar with Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
