Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by agreeing that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives and provides two main supporting arguments regarding health and daily convenience. However, the response is severely limited by its length, containing only 139 words, which falls well short of the 250-word minimum requirement for Task 2. Consequently, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack the extension and depth expected at higher bands. While the position is clear, the lack of adequate length and comprehensive explanation restricts the score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text exhibits basic logical organisation with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Basic cohesive devices are used to structure the text, such as "firstly", "Secondly", and "In conclusion". Paragraphing is correctly attempted to separate ideas. However, the overall progression is limited by the brevity of the response, and referencing is sometimes simplistic. Despite these limitations, the flow of ideas is coherent enough for the reader to follow the argument without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, featuring appropriate terms such as "medicines, vaccines", "smartphones", and "communicate". However, the range is quite limited and repetitive, with basic words like "important", "helps", and "make". There are also formatting and typographical issues with apostrophes, such as "people`s" instead of "people's", and some spelling errors like "beacuse". The lexical resource is minimally adequate for communication but lacks the flexibility and less common items required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and moderately complex sentence forms, such as "Modern technology such as smartphones, computers and the internet helps people communicate and work quickly." There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("scientist have developed" instead of "scientists have"), capitalization errors at the beginning of sentences like "firstly", and punctuation omissions. However, many simple sentences are accurate, and the errors do not impede overall communication. The range of structures remains limited due to the short length.
