Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and well-defined position that science's primary goal should be improving human life. The essay presents two main supporting ideas: technological inventions providing physical comfort, and intellectual development enhancing critical thinking. These ideas are generally well developed with relevant examples, such as refrigerators, mobile phones, and medical professions. However, some of the reasoning is slightly repetitive, and certain examples, like the discussion of doctors, lean towards stating the prestige of the profession rather than directly tying it back to daily quality of life improvements. Nevertheless, the position is sustained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. Because the arguments are clearly presented and supported, a band score of 6.5 is well-earned.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'First and foremost', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, as seen in phrases like 'with that human beings' and 'for that is science has treasure'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the main topics are clearly separated. While the logical flow is evident, minor lapses in the natural deployment of cohesive ties keep this criterion firmly at a solid 6.5 band level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'cutting-edge technology', 'user-friendly', and 'state-of-the-art'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word forms. Examples include 'improves living' (instead of 'improving lives'), 'provides human species to think' (awkward collocation), 'has bring easiness' (grammatical and lexical slip), and 'wisodm' (spelling error). Additionally, phrasing like 'highest category professions' is unnatural. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, aligning with the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several recurring errors with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'technology and develop certain innovations that help bring ease', 'washing machines that has bring easiness', and 'help acquire individuals an increase sense of wonder'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but prepositional errors and awkward syntactic structures appear frequently throughout the text. These errors occasionally disrupt the reading flow, preventing the score from reaching a higher band. Consequently, a Band 6.0 reflects this mix of sentence structures alongside persistent mechanical mistakes.
