Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science has always helped humanity to move forward and make lives better. Therefore, I agree with the larger extent that the main goal of science should be improving human life by supporting it with various advancements in different areas.

In the first place, science has shown its ability to enhance lives in healthcare. There are various types of innovations like vaccines, medical instruments, antibiotics and surgical techniques have drastically lowered mortality rates and extended life expectancy. To cite an example, one of the well-known diseases called polio, it was incurable in earlier times and many individuals died from this disease, but after the invention of the polio vaccine, the number of polio cases have disappeared and the whole earth is now polio free. Moreover, it is not only helpful in vaccines, but also beneficial for surgical technology. For instance, in cardiac arrest, sometimes the heart is not working properly. As a consequence, one of the science-invented instrument is pacemaker; it provides small electrical shock to keep the heart working properly and due to this invention has increased the patients' lives.

Furthermore, science has led to significant progress in communication and technology, resulting in improved convenience and connectivity. A recent development is artifical intelligence. Although there are a few negatives, it is very beneficial for various fields like research, education, medicine and various industries. Artificial intelligence provide wide varity of information within a second. It also replaces man power in industries and it is a very helpful tool for human beings.

To conclude, science holds enormous potential to improve lives across different areas. The ongoing quest for scientific knowledge has resulted in innovation in healthcare, technology and environmental conservation. By giving priority to applying these scientific discoveries for the benefit of humanity, human beings can create a world that is healthier, more advanced, and more eco-friendly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly, taking a clear stance that the main goal of science should indeed be improving human life. The writer covers both healthcare and technology, offering relevant examples such as vaccines and artificial intelligence to support the main thesis. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some arguments lack deeper extension; for instance, the discussion on artificial intelligence touches on various fields quickly without fully developing how these applications directly translate to improving everyday life. While the ideas are relevant and well-selected, they hover around a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level of development because certain points remain somewhat generalised rather than fully expanded.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression, moving logically from an introduction to healthcare examples, then technological advancements, and finally a succinct conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, with each body paragraph starting with a topical transition like 'In the first place' and 'Furthermore'. Cohesive devices are generally present, though some referencing and transitions are a bit mechanical, such as 'one of the well-known diseases called polio, it was incurable'. Additionally, minor grammatical awkwardnesses in sentence linking occasionally interrupt the natural flow of ideas, aligning the performance closely with Band 6 descriptors where cohesion is generally adequate but sometimes faulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'mortality rates', 'life expectancy', and 'environmental conservation'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text. Examples include 'agree with the larger extent' instead of 'to a large extent', 'artifical intelligence' (spelling slip), and 'science-invented instrument' rather than 'scientific instrument'. Furthermore, phrases like 'the whole earth is now polio free' lack precise academic phrasing. These inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a Band 7, but the vocabulary remains sufficient to communicate the main ideas clearly, fitting Band 6 well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'By giving priority to applying these scientific discoveries...'. However, grammatical errors are frequent enough to affect precision. Notable errors include plural/singular mismatches ('vaccines, medical instruments, antibiotics and surgical techniques have' missing a subject link or punctuation, and 'number of polio cases have disappeared' where 'has' is required). There are also awkward phrasings like 'due to this invention has increased the patients' lives'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they demonstrate inconsistent control over complex structures, pointing firmly to a Band 6 score.
