Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The student provides relevant ideas regarding technological advancements, economic development, and educational applications. However, some arguments remain somewhat general and under-developed, lacking specific real-world examples beyond broad references to medical operations and biological research. While the prompt is addressed and a clear stance is maintained throughout, the depth of extension places this response comfortably at Band 6.0 according to the criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised, though some body paragraphs group distinct thoughts together rather than developing a single central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance' and 'In conclusion' are used to connect ideas, but referencing and logical progression are occasionally mechanical or repetitive (e.g., the repeated reliance on 'science technology' and general transition markers). Consequently, the flow meets the requirements for a Band 6.0 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'technological advancements', 'economic development', and 'accessible'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'increase the science technology' instead of 'advance scientific technology' or 'raise their voice' rather than 'advocate'. Repetition of phrases like 'science technology' restricts the lexical flexibility. The errors do not impede communication, supporting a Band 6.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures with varying success. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing instances, such as 'Education also play a vital role' (subject-verb agreement error) and punctuation issues like missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'manageable. For instance'). However, the meaning is generally clear and these errors rarely impede communication, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
