Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives, taking a clear position that science brings innovations over time. However, the introduction mistakenly states that the essay discusses 'both the views', which contradicts the strongly agreed stance that follows and the body paragraphs that only support one side of the argument. Ideas are presented, but some body paragraph points lack full development and tend to over-generalise or drift slightly into unrelated territory, such as reviewing literature for a research topic. While the prompt is addressed, these structural contradictions and occasional lack of clear extension place the response at a Band 5.5 level for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, but the logical progression is frequently disrupted. The cohesive devices used are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, as seen in transition phrases like 'To begin this' and 'To elaborate on this'. Paragraphing is attempted, but paragraph boundaries and internal flow feel disjointed. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use and dangling clauses in sentences like 'this is all due to the innovation of science, so it is less money and time commuting.' Overall, the organizational flaws and faulty cohesion place this criterion in the Band 5.0 range.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'significant achievement', 'substantial changes', and 'scientific innovations'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as writing 'made our tasks much more easier', 'disscuses both the views', 'access on all online sources', and 'relative literature' instead of 'related literature'. These lexical inaccuracies and occasional spelling slips do not completely impede communication, allowing the writer to secure a Band 5.5 for Lexical Resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently result in grammatical errors and punctuation issues. Examples include tense inconsistencies in the opening sentence ('plays... and made'), comma splices ('technology is one of the significant achievement of science, it helps...'), and missing prepositions or articles. Frequent errors in grammar and clause connection cause some difficulty for the reader and mean that error-free sentences are not in the majority, aligning best with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
