Student answer (Band 6.5)

Science has always helped humanity to move forward and make lives better. Therefore, I agree with the larger extent that the main goal of science should be improving human life by supporting it with various advancements in different areas.

In the first place, science has shown its ability to enhance lives in healthcare. There are various types of innovations like vaccines, medical instruments, antibiotics, and surgical techniques have drastically lowered mortality rates and extended life expectancy. To cite an example, one of the well-known diseases called polio was incurable in earlier times and many individuals died from this disease, but after the invention of the polio vaccine, the number of polio cases has disappeared and the whole earth is now polio-free. Moreover, it is not only helpful with vaccines, but also beneficial for surgical technology. For instance, in cardiac arrest, sometimes the heart is not working properly. As a consequence, one of the science-invented instruments are pacemaker; it provides a small electrical shock to keep the heart working properly and this invention has increased the patients' lives.

Furthermore, science has led to significant progress in communication and technology, resulting in improved convenience and connectivity. A recent development is artificial intelligence. Although there are a few negatives, it is very beneficial for various fields like research, education, medicine and various industries. Artificial intelligence provides wide variety of information within a second. It also replaces manpower in industries and it is a very helpful tool for human beings.

To conclude, science holds enormous potential to improve lives across different areas. The ongoing quest for scientific knowledge has resulted in innovation in healthcare, technology and environmental conservation. By giving priority to applying these scientific discoveries for the benefit of humanity, human beings can create a world that is healthier, more advanced, and more eco-friendly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear stance that agrees with the statement. The writer successfully highlights healthcare and technology (specifically artificial intelligence) as key areas where science improves human life. Ideas are generally well-extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the eradication of polio and the function of pacemakers. However, some arguments could be explored in slightly greater depth to reach the higher bands fully. For instance, the discussion on artificial intelligence touches on negatives and positives but remains somewhat general. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled, earning a Band 7.0 for addressing all parts with a clear position and supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to healthcare, then to technology, and finally to a well-structured conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In the first place', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is handled well, ensuring each major point is contained within its own logical block. Although referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive, the overall cohesion is effective and meets the requirements of Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'mortality rates', 'life expectancy', 'cardiac arrest', and 'environmental conservation'. There are, however, some slight inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'one of the science-invented instruments are pacemaker' (grammatical agreement aside, the collocation 'science-invented' is unnatural) and 'the number of polio cases has disappeared'. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary with general success, occasional minor errors keep this criterion at a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, nevertheless, a few noticeable grammatical errors that disrupt fluency. For example, the sentence 'There are various types of innovations like vaccines, medical instruments, antibiotics, and surgical techniques have drastically lowered...' suffers from a double-verb structure error. Additionally, 'one of the ... instruments are pacemaker' contains a subject-verb agreement error and requires a plural noun. Despite these recurring grammatical slips, communication is never impeded, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0.
