Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people argue that the most important aim of science should be to improve the lives of people. Others, however, hold an opposite perspective. I completely agree with this view not only because it prioritizes people's wellbeing, but also it will make scientific discoveries more worthwhile.

To begin with, when the prime focus of scientific research will be surrounded by the enhancement of modern people, it might bring profound value to people's overall wellbeing. This is because, the welfare of human civilization largely depends on the scientific inventions whenever any crisis arises. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was desperately waiting for the invention of coronavirus vaccine, which eventually brought everything to normal. Thus, science has to consider aiming to improve people's lives as the most significant aspect.

What's more, if science is primarily focused on innovation and research linked to individuals' betterment, the findings would get special attention from those who are in need. For instance, people who are suffering from eyesight issues would feel blessed to get a cure that can ensure their normal lives without struggling with heavy spectacles. This attention will become a green signal for the scientists that they are working in a project that has the potential to change people's lives forever. The satisfaction they will receive will add extra value to the research which will eventually make it worthwhile.

In conclusion, though there might be other aspects science can focus on, I believe, the most important aim of science should be to enhance people's lives, as it will create value to the field itself, and also people's wellbeing will be promoted at the same time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt well by taking a clear position that the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The introduction clearly states this viewpoint, and the body paragraphs provide relevant arguments and examples, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and medical treatments like cures for eyesight issues. Ideas are extended and supported, demonstrating a solid understanding of the task requirements. However, the development in the second body paragraph could be pushed slightly further to explore alternative perspectives or deeper implications in order to reach the highest bands. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear position throughout, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, followed by two well-defined body paragraphs, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'What's more', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. However, some of the transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural and flexible, which places this response comfortably in the Band 7 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, with terms like 'wellbeing', 'civilization', 'innovation', and 'profound value'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'desperately waiting' and 'green signal', though some collocations are slightly awkward or unnatural, such as 'working in a project' instead of 'working on a project'. Spelling and word-choice errors are rare and do not impede communication. The lexical range demonstrates sufficient flexibility and precision, matching the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance, rounded here to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include conditional and relative clauses like 'when the prime focus... might bring profound value' and 'people who are suffering from eyesight issues'. However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'not only because it prioritizes people's wellbeing, but also it will make' (which lacks parallel structure) and tense errors like 'when the prime focus... will be surrounded'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, placing the grammatical performance at a Band 6.
