Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response is severely penalised because it fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 125 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is heavily restricted and incomplete. While the student attempts to address the prompt by discussing the role of science in improving medical facilities and exploring the negative impacts of technology such as robots making people lazy, these ideas remain underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting evidence or a clear, sustained position throughout. Phrases like 'The disagree point is that' show an attempt to present a counter-argument, but the overall task is only partially fulfilled due to the extreme brevity of the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates a basic attempt at organising ideas, moving from medical advancements to a counter-argument about laziness and robots. However, the overall arrangement lacks clear progression and cohesive links are frequently missing, repetitive, or awkward. The writer uses basic transitions such as 'For example,' multiple times, but there is an absence of sophisticated cohesive devices or logical connectors to guide the reader smoothly. Furthermore, the response is presented as a single paragraph rather than a properly structured essay with distinct introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs, which negatively impacts the overall readability and structural organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, but it lacks the range and precision expected for academic writing. The student attempts some less common topical terms such as 'pharmaceutical industries,' 'contagious disease,' and 'biotechnological applications,' demonstrating some awareness of style. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'Scientist search suitable medical facilities' instead of 'Scientists search for suitable...' and 'unhealthy quality of life.' Spelling errors also occur, such as 'Facebooks.' Because the vocabulary is repetitive and contains errors that occasionally strain meaning, it aligns most closely with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple sentence forms and occasional attempts at complex structures, such as 'For example, coronavirus is becoming a contagious disease and researchers find it challenging to manufacture its vaccine or booster.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Scientist search,' 'Medical researcher help'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing. Complex sentences are often faulty, and punctuation is inconsistent. These errors require the reader to occasionally decode the intended meaning, which places the grammar firmly at the Band 5.0 level.
