Student answer (Band 6.0)

In these times of scientific and technological advancement, people's lifestyles are being improved in many aspects, such as in education, health, business, communication, and so on. Although, science is inventing more advanced technology to develop artificial intelligence or exploring space, I strongly believe that the most important objective of science should be improving people's lives.

Many scientific inventions have already developed people's lives. For example, agricultural researchers have discovered some methods that fostered production of foods which helped many people to survive in this overpopulated world. Without agricultural development many people could die without having food. In addition, science has blessed the health sector where new technologies have been invented to be cured from many diseases, and thus, the average life expectancy of human has increased. Moreover, science has developed education, business, communication, and other sectors which are making people's life more convenient. So, it is evident that science can develop people's life, and it should be the priority because science was invented for the people's welfare first.

However, advanced science has allowed human to explore space and is developing artificial intelligence which indicates a footstep to a robotic world. Although, innovations are for the convenience of people so that they their lives can be more comfortable that can provide them with more time to enjoy their life, it is also overlooked that there are still many countries where people are starving or dying for the lack of good treatment facilities. A world where many people are still struggling to meet their basic needs to survive, exploring space or developing artificial intelligence does not make any sense without helping the struggling people first. Therefore, improving people's lives should be the priority of science.

In conclusion, science was invented for improving people's life. Although the advanced science is focusing on improving artificial intelligence or exploring space, improvement of people's lives should be the priority first.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear stance that the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as agricultural research helping to prevent starvation and medical technology increasing life expectancy. While the discussion occasionally touches on generalizations regarding space exploration and artificial intelligence, the arguments are logically structured and directly address the prompt. The response fully satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement, offering a well-developed exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction of the stance, followed by supporting body paragraphs discussing agricultural and medical advancements, then addressing the counter-argument concerning space and AI, and finally concluding. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions like 'Although, science is inventing...' and 'Although, innovations are...' exhibit slight mechanical usage and comma splices. Paragraphing is used appropriately to guide the reader through the argumentation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and sufficiently varied range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'overpopulated world', 'life expectancy', 'welfare', and 'starving'. There are attempts to use less common lexical items, though some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural or awkward, such as 'be cured from many diseases' instead of 'be cured of' or 'recover from', and 'footstep to a robotic world'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and occasional lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the arguments presented.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures using subordinate clauses ('Although science is inventing...', 'A world where many people are still struggling...'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'developed people's lives' instead of 'improved people's lives', 'allowed human to explore' instead of 'humans', and 'so that they their lives can be more comfortable that can provide them'. Punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas after 'Although', also occur. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to a solid Band 6.0.
