IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that the primary purpose of science must be to make human lives better. In my opinion, I completely agree with this statement because science has always been used to solve human problems, especially in health and communication.
Initially, the most important contribution of science is in the medical field. In the past, many people died from simple illnesses because there were no proper medicines. However, scientists developed vaccines and antibiotics like penicillin, which saved millions of lives. Today, because of medical science, life expectancy has increased globally, and diseases that used to be deadly can now be treated easily. This proves that science is most useful when it focuses on human health.
Furthermore, science has greatly improved our daily lives through technology and communication. In the modern world, inventions like smartphones and the internet have connected people globally. Students can learn anything online, and people can do business across countries easily. Furthermore, automated machines and home appliances have reduced the time people spend on hard manual labor, giving them more free time.
In conclusion, I believe that improving the quality of human life is the most vital aim of scientific research. While pure curiosity is good, scientists should always focus their resources and time on inventing things that solve real-world problems and make human life safer and more comfortable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear position that the primary aim of science should be to improve human lives. Relevant ideas are presented, such as contributions to the medical field and technological advancements in communication. However, the task achievement is constrained because the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, containing only 223 words. This negative impact on development means the ideas cannot be fully extended and supported, capping the achievement score. If the length requirement had been met, the clear position and supporting examples would have positioned the response comfortably in a higher band. As it stands, it partially addresses the task due to the length shortfall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, moving from an introduction to medical science, then technological improvements, and finally a succinct conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments, such as 'Initially', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct separation of ideas. Although referencing and cohesive links are sometimes standard rather than highly flexible, the organization is clear and easy to follow throughout, matching the requirements for a Band 7 in this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'life expectancy', 'antibiotics', and 'automated machines'. There are attempts to use precise terms related to science and health. Word choices are generally appropriate, though there are minor limitations in the variety of phrasing. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the essay (e.g., 'smartphones', 'appliances'). Communication is smooth and never impeded by lexical errors. While the range is sufficient for precision on familiar topics, it lacks the broader flexibility and sophistication required for higher band levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay displays a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully uses subordinate clauses and complex structures, such as in the sentence 'In the past, many people died from simple illnesses because there were no proper medicines.' Grammatical accuracy is generally high, with frequent error-free sentences throughout the response. Punctuation is used correctly to demarcate clauses and items in a list. Although the structural range is somewhat limited compared to higher bands, the control over basic and intermediate complex grammar is solid, resulting in very few errors that do not impede communication at all.
