IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The biggest concern of scientific development is expected to enhance human life. I strongly agree with that statement. The reason with proper justification is stated in the upcoming paragraphs.

Science is an extraordinary discovery for us humans. Because of it, many aspects of life have become easier and more convenient. Through the knowledge that we obtain from science and researches, we have already made great progress in the past few decades and created much more convenient ways to live than before. The more we look into in the more we find about how vast this knowledge is and how little we know of it. In the future, there will definitely be more improvements for humans because of science.

Researches suggest that science will bring revolutionary difference in the future. For example, there might be ways to cure the diseases that are fatal at the present. The most crucial aspect of it has to be people's lives and how this knowledge affects us. The best possible outcome would be to put it to good cause and strengthen our lifestyles. There are many fields that can be improved with the help of science such as farming, teaching, health, etc. All of those categories are concerned with possibly a greater sense of living and that has to be the sole purpose of science.

The learnings we gained from studies of science is very valuable. In my opinion, the best use of that data would be the betterment of human life because if it is not used for the betterment of humanity, it is a crime against humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and presents a clear position agreeing with the statement that the main aim of science should be to improve human lives. Ideas are introduced and supported with general arguments regarding technological advancements and healthcare improvements, such as curing fatal diseases and enhancing farming and teaching. However, these ideas tend to remain somewhat general and lack fully extended, concrete examples or deep critical analysis. Phrases like 'All of those categories are concerned with possibly a greater sense of living' touch upon the core issue, but the development remains relatively superficial. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are addressed, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor where relevant ideas are presented, although some aspects are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is coherent overall with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction through body paragraphs to a final conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as general scientific progress in the second paragraph and specific potential applications in the third. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'The more we look into in the more we find' and transitional phrases like 'For example' and 'In my opinion'. Referencing is occasionally ambiguous, as seen in sentences like 'The most crucial aspect of it has to be people's lives...', where the antecedent for 'it' is slightly unclear. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'extraordinary discovery', 'convenient', 'revolutionary difference', and 'betterment of humanity'. There are, however, noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'The reason with proper justification is stated in the upcoming paragraphs', 'look into in the more', and 'learnings we gained'. Spelling is generally accurate, but word choices occasionally lack precision or natural stylistic flow. These limitations place the vocabulary firmly in the Band 6 category, where an adequate range is shown alongside attempts at less common vocabulary that contain some inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure with constructions like 'Because of it, many aspects of life have become easier and more convenient' and 'There are many fields that can be improved with the help of science...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as prepositional misuse ('look into in the more') and subject-verb agreement or tense shifts ('The learnings we gained from studies of science is very valuable'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical slips and awkward structures prevents the score from reaching a higher band. This corresponds directly to the Band 6 descriptor.
